Overview: As a Cost Manager, you will play a critical role in managing project financials to ensure accurate cost forecasting, tracking, and control across large-scale infrastructure and energy projects. You will collaborate closely with project teams, including project managers, engineers, and clients, to provide financial oversight and recommendations throughout the project lifecycle. A key part of the role will involve cost mapping, ensuring that project expenses are aligned with budget allocations and identifying any discrepancies or areas for optimization.
Key Responsibilities:

    • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates during the project’s early phases, including feasibility and conceptual stages.
  • Cost Control, Mapping & Reporting:
    • Develop and maintain cost management systems and tools to map expenditures against budgeted items, tracking committed and actual costs across various cost categories (labor, materials, subcontractors, etc.).
    • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of financial performance, with regular updates to project managers and senior leadership.
    • Perform detailed cost mapping to ensure all project costs are assigned to the correct work packages and budget lines, identifying areas where costs may be misallocated.
    • Provide financial analysis and cost tracking for labor, materials, subcontractor services, and other project expenditures.
  • Forecasting & Risk Management:
    • Perform regular forecasting of project costs, identifying potential risks and developing mitigation strategies to minimize financial impact.
    • Identify trends and provide cost control insights, including recommending changes to project scope or timing when necessary.
  • Procurement & Vendor Management:
    • Collaborate with procurement teams to manage contracts and vendor costs, ensuring that all financial aspects are well-documented and accounted for.
    • Negotiate contract terms related to costs and payments, ensuring that they are favorable to the project’s financial goals.
  • Cost Mapping for Resource Allocation:
    • Work with project managers to map costs to specific project phases or deliverables, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and financial data reflects the actual progress of the project.
    • Continuously monitor cost mappings and make adjustments as necessary to align with project changes or reforecasted budgets.
  • Stakeholder Communication:
    • Act as the financial point of contact for clients, providing detailed cost reporting and answering any inquiries related to project expenses.
    • Support project managers by providing regular cost analysis and financial updates in client-facing meetings.
  • Compliance & Best Practices:
    • Ensure all financial reporting and documentation adhere to Burns & McDonnell’s policies and industry standards.
    • Recommend and implement cost management best practices across multiple projects, particularly related to cost mapping processes.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5 years of experience in cost control, financial management, or project controls within a construction or engineering environment.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in cost management software (e.g., Oracle Primavera, SAP, MS Excel).
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on detail and accuracy.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and clients.
    • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
