Description
The Quality Control (QC) Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all quality assurance and control processes within the manufacturing facility. This role ensures that production meets industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company specifications for engineered wood products such as cross-laminated timber (CLT), glued laminated timber (glulam), and other mass timber components. The QC Supervisor will lead lab technician teams, implement quality control protocols, and collaborate with production teams to maintain product excellence.
Duties and Responsibilities
Quality Control & Compliance:
- Monitor and enforce quality control standards in glulam and CLT production, ensuring adherence to ANSI/APA PRG 320, ANSI/APA 190.1, and other relevant standards.
- Conduct regular inspections and testing of raw materials, adhesives, laminations, and final products to ensure compliance with safety and structural integrity requirements.
- Maintain and oversee calibration of testing equipment, including moisture meters, strength testing machines, and adhesive application systems.
- Investigate and address non-conformances, implementing corrective and preventive actions to minimize defects.
Process Improvement & Documentation:
- Track key performance indicators (KPIs) for product quality and implement process improvements to reduce waste and rework.
- Lead root cause analysis efforts to identify production defects and work with production teams to resolve issues.
- Ensure accurate record-keeping for inspections, certifications, and compliance audits.
Team Leadership & Training:
- Supervise and mentor quality control technicians, providing training on quality standards and best practices.
- Foster a culture of quality and continuous improvement within the production team.
- Conduct internal audits and coordinate third-party inspections as needed.
Regulatory & Safety Compliance:
- Work closely with safety teams to maintain compliance with OSHA and other workplace safety regulations.
- Assist in customer and third-party audits, certification processes, and sustainability initiatives (e.g., FSC® certification, EPDs).
- Required Skills & Experience
- Education (Preferred): Bachelor’s or associate's degree in Wood Science, Engineering, Manufacturing, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience: 1-5 years in a quality control or supervisory role within a wood products, engineered lumber, or mass timber manufacturing environment.
- Technical Skills:
- Familiarity with mass timber manufacturing processes, adhesives, and structural testing methods.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools and QC software.
- Soft Skills: Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and communication skills.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Work is performed in a manufacturing plant setting, with exposure to machinery, wood dust, and varying temperatures.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform hands-on quality inspections.
