What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Inspector and Testing Technician position at SME?
The Opportunity:
- In this position you will start out testing and sampling construction material in the field. After becoming proficient in sampling and testing and after demonstrating the ability to work independently and coach others in sampling and testing you will be given the opportunity, should you desire, to be trained and receive industry recognized certifications in inspection.
- As a Construction Testing/Sampling Technician you will be trained and receive industry recognized certifications to perform the following services on a project site: concrete sampling and testing, soil sampling and density testing and Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) sampling and density testing.
- As an Inspector you will be on road and/or bridge construction sites observing and documenting the contractor’s work operation to verify their compliance with the design plans and specifications. Examples of work operations you will be observing are underground utility installation, concrete paving, HMA paving, bridge construction and bridge rehabilitation.
- As an Inspector you will have the opportunity to obtain industry recognized certifications in concrete paving, HMA paving and bridge rehabilitation and construction
Responsibilities:
- Performing field testing and inspection for concrete, soils, asphalt, structural connections, and other various construction materials. Performing routine tasks, tests and calculations associated with materials testing and field observations.
- Completing and submitting accurate inspection daily field reports. Monitoring, interpreting, interpreting, and communicating test results to contractors, clients, engineers and other project team members.
- Taking and transporting construction materials samples. Travelling to different project sites as needed.
- Recognizing and effectively communicating test results to contractors, clients, engineers and other project team members. Recognizing and effectively communicating problems to the proper party in a timely manner.
- Maintaining testing equipment, while in use, in such a state as to prevent failure, degradation, or erroneous test results.
- Use your problem-solving skills to identify and resolve complex construction challenges.
- Turn in daily inspection and testing reports in a timely manner.
- Being able to understand and interpret information in the project design plans and design specifications.
- Good math skills are needed to field measure daily quantities of work performed by the contractor and to calculate quantities in square footage, square yards and volume measurements.
Requirements:
- Has competency using computer operating systems and MS Office Suite programs (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with clients, team members, and supervisors, conveying technical information clearly.
- Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, manage workloads, maintain accurate and detailed record-keeping skills, documenting field observations, safety concerns, and problem resolutions.
- Effective interpersonal skills to build rapport with clients and team members, fostering positive working relationships, customer-centric approach to provide excellent service to clients, ensuring their needs and concerns are addressed promptly and professionally.
- Must be able to understand and adapt to change and react productively to frequent interruptions and changing conditions.
- Basic construction competencies including ability to determine location from surface features and landmarks by interpretation from surveys, road maps, aerial photos, design plans, understanding construction stakes set by others, and color markings of utility companies.
- Has a general aptitude for identifying and resolving complex technical problems in the field, utilizing critical thinking, good math skills and logical reasoning.
- Demonstrates ethical conduct, maintaining confidentiality and ensuring safety and security in all aspects of work, strict adherence to safety protocols and guidelines, fostering a safe working environment for yourself and others.
- Ability to handle physical demands, such as lifting (up to 50lbs repetitively), walking on uneven ground frequently, and carrying equipment, working in various weather conditions, and traveling to different locations.
