What are the responsibilities and job description for the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Inspector position at SMEUSA?
The Opportunity
We work with a wide assortment of clients on diverse and unique projects, often associated with the rehabilitation or new construction of various sites, buildings, facilities, and/or roadway structures. The emphasis of your role will be to work primarily in prestressed or precast concrete facilities to perform Quality Assurance (QA) services related to Department of Transportation (DOT) projects. Depending on the project, your position could include a range of work activities. Most of the work opportunities would include, but may not be limited to, daily site visits to local fabrications plants. Additional work activities may include assisting with assessing highway structures throughout the state, materials testing on sites or within in one of our laboratories, or occasional to travel to perform evaluations and testing at project sites or within manufacturing or fabrication facilities in other states.

Responsibilities
- Perform QA audits and oversee quality control (QC) activities.
- Performing testing of concrete, oversee concrete breaks, measure element components, perform additional material sampling or testing, document field observations, etc.
- Gather and maintain documentation for the associated materials, fabrication records, shop drawings, and Quality Control records.
- Coordinate with DOT representatives regarding any non-conformities, then oversee the corrective actions.
- Occasionally assisting with other QA or QC services, such as testing/evaluations on concrete, soils, asphalt, masonry and other construction materials at construction sites and in our labs, as needed, to support other service groups within SME.
- Current Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI level II) Personnel Certification and maintained relevant/prerequisite certifications (e.g. ACI, MCA, etc.); or relevant training documentation that would qualify for pursuing PCI examination and certification.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Proficient with commonly used computer programs and phone apps (e.g. Microsoft word/excel, PDFs, email, web browsers, maps, etc.).
- Ability to handle physical demands, such as lifting and carrying equipment (up to 50lbs repetitively), regularly wearing specialty Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for extended periods of time (e.g. full-face respirator, coveralls, harnesses, unique gloves/boots, etc.), walking on uneven ground frequently, working in various weather conditions including hot and cold environments, and traveling to different locations.
- Travel to sites throughout the state, with consideration given to assigning you to projects close to your base office, and occasional travel to sites in other states. Occasional overtime, weekend work, and out-of- town, overnight travel will also be required to meet our clients’ needs.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with clients, team members, and supervisors, conveying technical information clearly, concisely and in a professional manner.
- Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, manage workloads, maintain accurate and detailed record-keeping skills, documenting field observations, safety concerns, and problem resolutions.
- Effective interpersonal skills to build rapport with clients and team members, fostering positive working relationships, customer-centric approach to provide excellent service to clients, ensuring their needs and concerns are addressed promptly and professionally.
- Able to understand and adapt to change and react productively to frequent interruptions and changing conditions.

- Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA) and/or Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) related experience preferred, but not required.
- Basic construction competencies including ability to determine location from surface features and landmarks by interpretation from surveys, road maps, aerial photos, topographic maps, and geologic maps; understanding construction stakes set by others, and color markings of utility companies; or general knowledge of construction activities, inspection, or testing preferred, but not required.
