What You'll Do
You'll oversee and lead all aspects of SMA's mechanical engineering departmentestablishing standards, elevating quality, growing the team, and enhancing our already strong reputation. You'll be involved from concept to closeout on projects across healthcare, education, commercial, industrial, and mission-critical sectors.
Core Responsibilities:
- Serve as the department lead, reporting directly to the firm's partners
- Set and maintain department standards, protocols, and design consistency
- Oversee quality control on all mechanical projects
- Mentor and develop engineering staff; lead recruiting and onboarding
- Optimize team productivity and resource management
- Create and manage mechanical specifications, details, and calculation templates
- Collaborate with PMs on scopes, drawing sets, and project expectations
- Review and approve timesheets, performance evaluations, and salary increases
- Select and maintain software tools that support departmental excellence
- Monitor project budgets and hours, manage change of scope, and authorize overtime
- Lead proposal writing, fee development, and client invoicing on major projects
- Represent SMA in client meetings and at industry events
What You Bring
- BSME/BSAE/MET or related engineering discipline
- Active PE license in Pennsylvania (required)
- 10 years of mechanical design experience in complex building systems
- Experience managing engineering teams and working directly with clients
- Proven ability to write proposals, manage budgets, and lead project delivery
- Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Trane Trace 700 (or Carrier HAP), and Microsoft Office
- Familiarity with Revit and commissioning practices a plus
- LEED AP or other sustainability credentials preferred
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Passion for mentorship and a commitment to technical excellence
