The Supervisory Museum Curator reports directly to the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (CHSDM) Director. The position's primary function is to provide leadership to the Museum’s curatorial departments (215,000 objects), and to direct the overall curatorial vision and creative direction of content for the institution.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications (1015 series):
Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as 1) Managing and leading staff at a museum or cultural institution; 2) Researching, collecting, and exhibiting material related to a broad range of design fields, encompassing the historical and contemporary diversity of architecture, design, decorative arts, and other design fields, including prints and drawings, textiles, applied arts, and industrial design; and 3) Initiating, developing, and coordinating research projects on design topics.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

In This Position, You Will
- Serve as the Director’s lead and principal partner/advisor on curatorial affairs, content, and creative vision, and assist the Director and other senior management staff in developing overall policy and direction for the museum to fulfill its stated mission.
- Prepare and manage the department’s curatorial budget and work closely with the Exhibitions and Finance teams on the annual calendar of exhibitions and projects, in accordance with budget processes and approvals.
- Oversee CHSDM’s acquisitions (including purchases, gifts, and commissions) to expand the scope, improve the collection’s overall quality, and uphold CHSDM’s mission to broaden and diversify its holdings.
- Oversee the Conservation team and other curatorial functions, as well as oversee, supervise, and manage the work of five curatorial departments.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications (1015 series):
- Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field.
- Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
- Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above.
