Summary
The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning in individual students and assumes responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning intervention, evaluation, management, and/or referral activities; serves as the direct link between physicians, families and community agencies to assure access and continuity of health care of students; provides relevant instruction, counseling, and guidance to students, parents, staff, and others concerning health-related issues; upholds professional standards, the state Nurse Practice Act, and other state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing practice; and adheres to district policies and administrative guidelines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Utilize a distinct knowledge base for decision making in nursing practice.
- Use a systematic approach to problem solving in nursing practice.
- Contribute to the education of the client with special health needs by assessing such clients, planning and providing appropriate nursing care, and evaluating the identified outcomes of care.
- Use effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive school health program.
- Collaborate with other school professionals, parents, and care givers to meet the health, developmental and educational needs of students.
- Collaborate with the members of the community in the delivery of health and social services, utilize knowledge of community health systems and resources to function as a school-community liaison.
- Assist students, families and the school community to achieve optimal levels of wellness through appropriately designed and delivered health education.
- Contribute to nursing and school health through innovations and practice in research or research-related activities.
- Identify, delineate and clarify the nursing role, promotes quality of care, pursue continued professional development, and demonstrates professional conduct.
Qualifications
Minimum Standards:
- Must have graduated from an appropriately accredited school of nursing.
- Must be licensed to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Missouri (R.N.).
- Should have acquired the professional competencies necessary for beginning practice in school nursing.
