GED Instructor
Smoky Hill Education Service Center is seeking candidates for the position of GED Instructor at the Topeka Correctional Facility in Topeka, KS.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate educator to lead a GED (General Educational Development) program within the Topeka Correctional Facility. The GED Instructor will be responsible for designing and delivering instruction in core subject areas (mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts) to incarcerated individuals working toward their high school equivalency diploma. The ideal candidate will have content knowledge in many subject areas and foster a positive, structured, and inclusive learning environment that encourages academic success and personal growth.
Position Responsibilities:
· Planning, developing, and implementing engaging lessons aligned with GED curriculum standards.
· Assessing students' academic learning needs and develop supports for student learning
· Providing individual/group instruction in core content areas
· Adapting instruction to accommodate diverse learning needs
· Maintaining a structured and supportive learning environment within the security guidelines of the correctional facility
· Preparing students for official GED exams (e.g., test-taking strategies, practice assessments)
· Collaborating with facility staff, administrators, and other agencies to ensure program success.
· Tracking and reporting student attendance, performance, and outcomes
· Encouraging students to build confidence, persistence, and motivation for learning
· Ensuring compliance with all correctional facility regulations and policies regarding classroom management and safety
Preferred Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
· Kansas teaching license
- Strong instructional and classroom management skills
- Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learning needs
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
· Experience teaching high school, GED, or adult education programs
· Strong background in math and science
· Experience working with at-risk populations (e.g., correctional/alternative education)
· Power School experience
Additional Requirements:
- Proficiency with educational technology and assessment tools
- Must pass a background check
- Pass security clearance requirements for correctional facility
- Willingness to undergo facility-specific training and to adhere to all institutional policies
