Director of Marketing and Business Development
Smoot Construction Company of Washington, DC is seeking a full-time Director of Marketing and Business Development. The Director of Marketing is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for developing and executing the company’s marketing strategy to drive growth, enhance brand visibility, and support business development initiatives. The position requires collaboration with firm Principals to support our offices in Washington, DC; Boston, Massachusetts; and Columbus, Ohio in pursuing new projects, promoting our firm’s innovative work and collaborative culture, enhancing our brand presence in the industry, and expanding our markets.
Duties and Responsibilities
General duties and responsibilities include creating firm awareness; building and differentiating the brand; driving business development activities; and identifying, anticipating, and satisfying client objectives to achieve profitable business goals. Specifically, our Director of Marketing will:
Leadership
- Collaborate with firm Principals and executive leadership to develop a marketing strategy, define and execute initiatives that position the firm as a leader in the construction industry.
- Drive market analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and competitive positioning, ensuring alignment with the needs of the Washington, DC; Boston; and Columbus offices.
- Build, manage and coach a high-performing marketing team
Business Development Support
- Partner with Principals to create targeted marketing strategies that drive lead generation, client acquisition, and expansion into new markets.
- Develop proposals, presentations, and marketing collateral to support client pitches and RFP responses.

Digital Marketing and Campaigns
- Lead digital marketing efforts, including website optimization, social media, email campaigns, and paid advertising.
- Leverage data analytics to measure campaign effectiveness and adjust strategies accordingly.
Budget and Performance Management
- Manage the marketing budget, ensuring optimal allocation of resources to achieve the highest ROI.
- Establish KPIs and regularly report on the performance of marketing initiatives.
Minimum Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or related field and 10 years of experience in marketing, preferably in the construction, architecture, design or similar industry
- Outstanding communication, presentation and leadership skills
- In depth knowledge of market research
- Sense of ownership and pride in your performance and its impact on company’s success
- Critical thinker and problem-solving skills
- Good time-management skills
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator) and Microsoft Office
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
- Previous working experience as a Marketing Director or comparable position for 5 years
