Who is an Accountant at SMT?

As an Accountant at SMT, you will be responsible for performing accounting-related duties while working closely with the Senior Accountant and other Accounting teammates. Your gameplan will include assisting with maintenance of the Accounts Receivable function, monthly bank reconciliations, coding of client shipping and travel expense invoices. You will also tackle maintenance of fixed asset records, assistance with month-end and year-end close, and preparation of audit documentation as requested by the Company’s auditors.
Our Accountant position reports to our corporate headquarters in Durham, NC, with a schedule of Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM.

Accounts Receivable
- Assisting with the invoicing of monthly service fees and applicable travel and shipping to customers.
- Determination of general ledger codes and job cost codes for invoices.
- Maintaining and updating customer information in the accounting system.
- Collections efforts, including providing account statements to customers.
- Reconciling necessary accounts on a monthly basis.
- Maintaining fixed asset records.
- Calculating and recording estimated monthly depreciation expense.
- Working with Staff Accountant to ensure purchases are coded properly among general ledger accounts.
- Working with Staff Accountant and Shipping Department to ensure shipping invoices are entered into Sage Accounting software and coded properly for expense versus bill-back to clients.
- Creating invoices for billable shipping charges to be sent to clients on a timely basis.
- Working with Accounting Assistant to create invoices for all billable travel & expense charges to be sent to clients on a timely basis.
Here are some of the key skills and experiences we are looking for in our future game-changing teammate:
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in Accounting from an accredited institution.
- Strong understanding of accounting rules and principles.
- 1-3 years of Accounting experience, preferably in an organization of 50 employees.
- Intermediate knowledge of Accounting ERP software; Sage Accounting software is preferred but not required.
- Experience with Salesforce is preferred but not required.
- Strong Excel skills required, including experience with Pivot tables, if statements, basic formulas and formatting. VLOOKUP experience a plus.
- Proficient knowledge in Microsoft Office computer applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
- Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated proficient oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to changing roles and responsibilities.
- Must be resourceful and exhibit strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities.
- Ability to maintain the strictest confidentiality regarding financial information.
