The Operations Manager - Paper Mills is responsible for establishing the safety, quality, cost, and operating output of the facility. This position provides overall operational leadership support to align to the mill's strategic plan. This role is responsible for day-to-day management of the department's supervisory staff. An operations Manager is responsible for achieving production goals, managing performance of direct reports, making sound operational decisions, and troubleshooting customer issues.
Primary Duties
- Foster a safety-first culture wherein safety is a value and safety excellence is expected and a requirement of employment
- Foster a seamless and silo-free collaborative environment that promotes efficient communication and the open expression of ideas and suggestions
- Adhere to and enforce all safe work practices, ensuring all work areas are continuously compliant with OSHA and other appropriate standards
- Drive continuous process and productivity improvement; work closely with Technical and Engineering Director when significant machine-related issues are identified
- Support Stock Prep and Utilities Manager to build a unified mill-wide maintenance team and provide a step-change improvement in the utilization of SAP PM as a maintenance planning, execution, and control tool
- Communicate with customers/users on a regular basis to verify roll stock reliability and fitness for use.
- Direct manufacturing operations to ensure manufacturing standards are met and exceed all industry and customer requirements.
- Formulate solutions to minimize lead time and maximize product quality, productivity, and profit margin.
- Coach, empower, motivate and manage team of managers and individual contributors
- Assess organizational structure with a mind to increase/improve the potential for identifiable career paths and career advancement.
- Forecast financial requirements to inform annual budget development, schedule expenditures, analyze variances, and capital projects.
- Foster a team atmosphere, provide vision, and demonstrate support of the company's core values.
- Manages the routine (daily, weekly, monthly etc.) processing activities typically associated with the function of an Operations Manager in compliance with the Standards set by the Group
- Ensure all records/reports are completed on time and maintained appropriately
- Additional duties and responsibilities as may be assigned
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Paper Science, or related field
- 7 to 10 years of technical papermaking experience in a managerial role.
- Experience managing paper manufacturing operations
- Strong problem-solving techniques and statistical analysis skills
- Proclivity and ability to work in a high-energy, fast-paced environment
- Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and mill-common DCS and data historian systems
- Ability to persuade and positively influence others with facts and well-reasoned conclusions
- Availability to work a flexible schedule as needed, including planned and unplanned overtime, which may include weekends
- Experience in an ISO environment
- Lean, Six Sigma and Continuous Process Improvement knowledge and experience
