Description
The Lushootseed Program Instructor is responsible for teaching and instructing pupils in Lushootseed with preference to the Southern dialect and Snoqualmie culture, and monitors student progress to meet the individual needs of students. This position is for a novice Lushootseed speaker with teaching skills proficient in working with children from infant to 6 years old. This person will have enough skills to teach Lushootseed classes and facilitate Lushootseed programs at the Tribe’s Child Development Center.
Essential Duties:
- Plans an instructional program designed to meet individual student needs; prepares lesson plans.
- Implements/instructs the Language program and curriculum objectives inside of five different classrooms (infant, toddler, two’s, preschool, K-prep) on a daily basis.
- Confers with Center leadership and other instructional staff to provide guidance and evaluation and to encourage student achievement.
- Establishes classroom goals and objectives, in conformance with the monthly study, evaluates and records student progress, in collaboration with the Center leadership.
- Provide regular progress reports on the Lushootseed Program to the Lushootseed Program Manager.
- Collects and interprets a variety of data; provides reports for administrative purposes.
- Maintains professional competence. Attends and participates in all educational, administrative, and professional growth activities/functions required, including, but not limited to, working towards being a proficient Lushootseed speaker.
- Provide training, mentoring, and assistance with Bright Horizons teaching staff.
- Must attend all required meetings, including, but not limited to, monthly after-hours team meetings and quarterly professional development days.
Additional Duties:
- Assist in the development and maintenance of Lushootseed resources.
- Assist with Lushootseed Program curriculum research and development.
- Assist in developing Lushootseed lessons, songs and dance.

Education & Experience:
Education:
Level 1 -
- Associate degree in education and/or high school diploma or GED with a current WA State Teaching Certificate.
Level II -
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field and current WA State Teaching Certificate.
Experience:
Level I -
- Ability to read, understand, speak, and write Lushootseed with demonstrated knowledge of the southern dialect.
- Prior experience working with children.
- Prior teaching and lesson planning experience.
Level II –
Including the experience required in Level I, plus:
- Three years prior teaching experience.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted Washington State driver's license.
Other Requirements:
- Must be able to pass a thorough pre-employment and character background investigation, including fingerprint and DCYF background checks.
- Must agree to be subject to the Tribe's Controlled Substance and Alcohol Testing Policy to include pre-employment screening.
Work Environment:
Work generally takes place in a classroom environment within a controlled atmosphere building, however, this position will also require work outdoors in natural environments and will be subject to outside weather conditions. Noise levels are typically low to moderate.
Tribal Preference:
The Snoqualmie Indian Tribe follows the Tribal Hiring Preference as outlined in tribal policies, including the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO). TERO sets forth certain hiring preferences for qualified individuals who are enrolled in a federally recognized Indian tribe, as well as, in some cases, preference for certain family members of those individuals.
Additional Information:
- Hourly, compensation will be determined based on experience and starts at $24.30 per hour.
- This position is a permanent full-time position and employment is at will.
