Job Summary

The Lead Instructor, Aquatic Programs position is responsible for performing various tasks regarding planning, implementing, and supervising the day-to-day operation of aquatics swim lesson programs at The Fieldhouse.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, Red Cross, and AED Certifications or ability to obtain within two (2) weeks of hire.
  • Previous experience as Swim Instructor for various ages, levels, and abilities.
  • Strong swimming skills and knowledge.

The successful applicant must pass a required pre-employment background check and subsequent mandatory background checks in accordance with current District policy requirements.

Preferred but not required:

  • Water Safety and Starfish Swim Instructor certification/experience.
  • Current Red Cross certification.
  • Previous experience with aquatic safety, programming, planning, and supervising.

Essential Functions

The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position and are not all-inclusive.   • Provide first aid, CPR, and assistance in and out of the water as necessary; handle emergencies as required.
  • Plan, Supervise, and evaluate swim and swim programs in accordance with Basin’s curriculum, standards, and procedures.
  • Assist in hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, evaluating, and disciplining seasonal and part-time aquatics employees.
  • Handle checking in and out aquatic program participants.
  • Teach group swim classes and private swim lessons as needed.
  • Ensure the progress, safety, comfort, and enjoyment for class participants.
  • Resolve safety and pool maintenance issues in a prompt manner.
  • Communicate with participants and parents concerning lessons, student progress, and related program information.
  • Maintain and review records and evaluations of all aquatic programs, operations, staff, and facilities.
  • Understand emergency management procedures in order to teach other aquatics employees.
  • Enforce public health rules and regulations.
  • Maintain all pool storage presentation and cleanliness, including all outside organization facilities.
  • Inventory and monitor the condition of program equipment and recommend new equipment as needed.
Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of:

  • Swimming skills and the ability to demonstrate them.
  • Lesson planning and class management principles.
  • Learning development, stroke techniques, water safety, program levels, teaching methods, practices, and progressions.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Exhibit good leadership qualities, sound judgment, and integrity; accept guidance willingly.
  • Work well with people of all ages, abilities, and class sizes.
  • Understand sequential skill development and rules for aquatic-based programming.
  • Work with the public in a fast-paced and challenging environment.
  • Be assertive with patrons in enforcing rules.
  • Work independently with limited supervision or collaborate with a team.
  • Perform all duties with safety as a top priority.

Working Conditions and Aptitudes

  • Duties may be performed outdoors, involving extreme weather conditions, prolonged sun exposure, and pool chemicals such as chlorine.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination; high degree of mental and visual alertness.
  • Physically conditioned to swim and move quickly when needed.
  • Ability to conduct extractions, deliver first aid or life support, and deliver or move equipment.
  • Work effectively with crowds and uncooperative individuals during difficult situations, emergencies, or periods of continuous demand.
  • Duties primarily performed in a public setting requiring constant interaction with a variety of people.
  • Work a variety of shifts, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays, depending on department needs.
  • This position is ineligible for remote work. Essential duties cannot be completed without being physically present.

Physical Requirements

  • Equal or less than 75% | Focus on a computer screen.
  • Equal or less than 100% | Sitting or standing.
  • Equal or less than 25% | Walking, bending, and other physical exertion.
  • Equal or less than 50% | Pushing, pulling, and kneeling.
  • Equal or less than 75% | Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
