What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operations Manager position at SoCal Parrot?
SoCal Parrot, Southern California’s only wild parrot rehabilitation facility is seeking an experienced wildlife professional to manage the day-to-day operations.
If you are:
- Highly motivated
- A respectful coach and leader
- Organized and structured
- Passionate about conservation, animal care and welfare
- Fulfilled by making a positive impact in the community
- Goal oriented
- Inspired by collaboration, partnerships and positive working relationships
…then SoCal Parrot encourages you to apply for the Operations Manager position! This position is incredibly unique, fulfilling, and will allow you to expand on your current skill set by offering you a chance to explore the niche world of wild parrot rehabilitation. You will be making a direct impact on the conservation of several parrot species- three of which are endangered. You will serve as a wild parrot advocate in every sense of the word and will have ample opportunity to engage and educate the public about their parrot neighbors!
SoCal Parrot’s mission is heavily focused on keeping parrots wild and appreciating them as true, wild animals deserving of a free life. We were founded to bridge the gap of care and consideration for these magnificent creatures and 10 years later, we have returned over a thousand parrots back to their family flocks right here in Southern California. Below is an approximate breakdown of this position and how your time will be divided:
- Daily husbandry tasks - 40%
- Monitoring recovery of rehab patients - 13%
- Transporting parrots (to the facility, to/from the vet, etc.) - 7%
- Supervising/coaching/guiding staff and volunteers - 7%
- Answering and responding to rescue calls (varies by the season) - 5%
- Hand rearing orphaned nestlings/fledgies - 5%
- Responding to email/text/website inquiries - 5%
- Social media content creation/fundraising - 5%
- Facility maintenance - 5%
- Recruiting/screening/on boarding new staff and volunteers- 2%
- Record keeping - 2%
- Inventory management/supply tracking and ordering - 2%
- Community outreach/education - 2%
SoCal Parrot sees an increase in intakes during the spring-summer which is parrot baby season. This time of the year accounts for about 40% of our yearly intakes and it is a busy time that requires a lot of juggling, delegating, and multi-tasking. The second half of the year is much more quiet and this is usually the best time to schedule education/outreach events, work on upgrades and projects around the facility, and conduct fundraising initiatives.
This is a salary position of $55K/year, and includes housing- a 400 sq ft. house that has a fenced yard, large wraparound porch, covered porch, and a “bird porch.” The property is off-grid, so no utility bills and satellite internet access are included. Candidates must familiarize themselves with monitoring, spraying off the solar panels, and occasionally starting up the push button generators to recharge the batteries. This is not complicated; it doesn’t require strength or an engineering degree, but keeping gas on hand for the generators and monitoring their condition is essential. Communication with the director about any malfunctions of the hardware on the property as soon as possible is key because it sometimes takes a day or two to get repairs scheduled. Health insurance (Healthnet PPO) is included.
Thank you for your interest and we hope to hear from you soon!
