Description
Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) seeks a detail-oriented, highly motivated, and well-organized professional with a background in digital publishing, technology, or similar field for the position of Production Coordinator.
Reporting to the Production Manager, this position will serve as support for the production team, which includes three Composition Specialists, the Publishing Platform Manager, and a Production Coordinator specializing in print production, as well as the Production Manager. The production team is responsible for the production and dissemination of SIAM journals, books, and proceedings in both digital and print formats. This position is ideal for someone with 2-3 years of academic publishing or related experience, or someone with a keen interest in learning new publishing technologies and workflows. The Production Coordinator will serve as support for the full production lifecycle, from acceptance of manuscripts to publication, with a particular emphasis on digital publications and metadata management.
This position has the potential to be hybrid, with several days a week in SIAM’s Philadelphia office, or fully remote for the right candidate. Preference may be given to candidates in the Philadelphia area who are able to spend time in the SIAM offices. Remote candidates must have the ability to travel to Philadelphia several times a year and maintain core working hours compatible with Eastern Standard Time.
Key responsibilities
· Manage the production workflow for conference proceedings, including corresponding with conference chairs and vendors, collaborating on schedules and deadlines with SIAM’s conferences team, and practicing quality control for the final online version.
· Manage the workflow for any proceedings special projects, including, but not limited to, creating a digital archive for past conference proceedings, choosing vendors for newly acquired proceedings, and customizing workflows to accommodate special requests from conference chairs.
· Oversee the workflow for digital publications, including quality review checks on the display of journal XML and PDFs, with special attention to alternate text for images and other accessibility issues.
· Communicate with vendors on the creation of ebook files, with special attention to the inclusion of alternate text for figures, and troubleshooting any platform display errors.
· Submit applications for indexing journals, books, and proceedings. Assist with setting up and maintaining feeds for various abstract and indexing platforms.
· Assist the Publishing Platform Manager with general platform updates for SIAM’s online bookstore, including work through the web admin tool and PageBuilder.
· Assist in troubleshooting problems with SIAM macros, and cross train with composition specialists and production editors on solving LaTeX-related errors.
· Assist with monitoring the general production email inbox, answering author queries and requests as needed. Send occasional email remainders to authors for overdue proofs, manuscript files, or to troubleshoot journal manuscripts outside the standard workflow.
· Maintain archive of book and journal files.
· Works on other special assignments or projects as needed.
Qualifications
· 2 years’ experience in scholarly publishing or a related field
· Knowledge of, or strong interest in, online publishing technologies, including XML, TeX and/or MathJax
· Knowledge of, or interest in, journal submissions systems, preferably eJournalPress or similar
· Knowledge of, or interest in, digital accessibility, including alternate text and WCAG requirements
· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
· Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively
· Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
· Strong written and oral communication skills
· Strong knowledge of MS Office
· Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience
