The CERT division of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), a federally funded research and development center at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, engages in state-of-the-art research and development and provides robust solutions focused on ensuring that software engineers, cybersecurity experts, network and system administrators, and others are able to resist, recognize, and recover from attacks on software systems.

The Applied Systems Group helps organizations apply best practices, tools, and techniques at the rate needed to keep pace with evolving opportunities, threats, and risks. The goal of the team is to provide expertise in a wide range of skills throughout the software development lifecycle with a focus on holistic cybersecurity and engineering approaches to software intensive systems. Our team must keep pace with rapid changes to the computing and software landscape and, in some cases, the computing has outpaced the methods. It is incumbent upon us to generate novel approaches to meet specific and unique sponsor needs.

Position Summary:

You will participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle and will contribute to key decisions regarding design, technology selection, and architecture of secure and resilient systems. You will be expected to function within cross-domain teams; learn new skills, programming languages, and technologies as necessary; solve meaningful problems through technical innovation; and stay up to date with the latest software engineering trends and technologies. Working directly with sponsors and end users you will analyze customer requirements and provide novel solutions. You will also collaborate with sponsor’s technical staff throughout various phases of the development lifecycle and drive adoption by empowering sponsor to become self-sufficient.

Requirements:

  • BS degree in computer science or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline plus eight (8) years of related work experience; or MS degree in a relevant discipline plus five (5) years of related work experience; or PhD in a relevant discipline with two (2) years of applicable experience.
  • Willingness to travel to various locations to support the SEI’s overall mission. This may include national travel to sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion.
  • You will be subject to a background check and must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to break down high-level goals, or problem statements, into actionable parts, to plan, design, and implement iterative solutions
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with both technical and non-technical sponsors through effective communication and a deep understanding of their goals and challenges
  • A clear understanding and passion for delivering value of quality using modern software engineering practices and methodologies
  • Strong grasp of the fundamentals of Computer Science, such as programming, data structures, and algorithms
  • Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD, and cybersecurity concepts

Desired Experience:

  • Experience with hands-on technical consulting working with cross-functional teams and multi-level stakeholders
  • Participation in technical communities via blogs, webinars, peer reviewed publications, and attending/speaking at events
  • Working knowledge of general infrastructure and networking concepts (cloud and/or on-prem)
  • Familiarity with virtualization, containerization and workload orchestration technologies.
  • Experience with a variety of software system types and platforms.
  • Usage of various software architectural frameworks and patterns.
