What are the responsibilities and job description for the Agriculture Manager position at Sokaogon Chippewa Community?
Job Summary: This newly created position is intended to lead the development and implementation of all aspects related to the Sokaogon Farm. The Agriculture Manager will plan, design and oversee projects and tasks geared towards managing a successful agricultural operation. The ideal Manager will be a flexible, driven, self-motivated worker with a passion for the outdoors. The Manager will need to delicately balance their schedule against the required tasks the farm necessitates on a daily and weekly basis. This inherent flexibility required for managing the Sokaogon Farm may result in fluctuating weekly schedules (e.g. differing start and end times).
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Complete an assessment and develop a community farm plan.
- Complete a proposed 5 year budget.
- Complete a list of possible funding sources for the planning document.
- Attend trainings as needed.
- Work with Tribal Elders/Community on their vision for the community farm.
- Work with USDA NRCS on potential EQIP/CSP Practices for farm property.
- Visit other Tribal Farms.
- Manage existing volunteers.
- Plan and manage 2025-2026 growing season.
- Install high tunnels.
- Research history of traditional seeds.
- Maintain supplies and equipment.
- Report to Environmental Director.
- Must have a working knowledge and be able to adhere to all tribal ordnances, policies and procedures, EPA permitting process, THPO permitting process and any other regulations that are applicable to the grant projects.
- Complete all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Tribal Preference will be priority.
- Bachelor’s or associates degree in science in the field of Agriculture and/or four years of experience of produce farming including management on a farm required.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Familiar with farm equipment, tractors, irrigation, cover cropping, and pest management using organic methods.
- Ability and enthusiasm to work as a member of a team with an interest and willingness to achieve Tribal Farm goals.
- Knowledge of USDA NRCS EQIP programs and how they work.
- Experience with farm record keeping and using Microsoft Excel preferred.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Appreciation of American Indian culture and values.
- Must have excellent communication and leadership skills.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit and stand; taste or smell; have manual and finger dexterity; stoop, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to crawl, climb heights, reach above shoulder level, crouch, kneel, balance, push/pull, and carry. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
