Job Description
The successful candidate will serve as an Archaeological Technician supporting the Cultural Resources Program at Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site (PCMS) in support of U.S. Army Garrison Fort Carson, CO.
PCMS is approximately 150 miles southeast of Fort Carson, near Model in Las Animas County, CO.
The candidate will provide on-site technical support at PCMS for archaeological monitoring and cultural resources surveys, and will perform the following tasks:
- Conduct field-level archaeological site monitoring in accordance with the Integrated Cultural Resource Management Plan (ICRMP) and Programmatic Agreements (PAs). This includes:
1. Routine site inspections and after-action inspections to identify impacts from human activity2. Long-term monitoring (site condition assessment) to identify and evaluate cultural and natural impacts3. Photographing significant features and general site overviews4. Documenting and evaluating newly identified cultural resources and inadvertent discoveries5. Monitoring ground-disturbing activities6. Preparing and/or updating site documentation and updating archival and GIS databases7. Creating GIS spatial data and maps8. Preparing monitoring reports9. Recommending changes to inspection/monitoring frequency * Conduct cultural resource investigations in support of proposed Section 106 undertakings and Section 110 survey and evaluations.
- Prepare historic context studies, survey forms, site forms, and technical reports, as required.
- Analyze and photograph the PCMS artifact assemblage and prepare for long-term curation.
Specific Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field and a minimum of two (2) years of archaeological field experience.
- Working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, field techniques, and survey/investigation processes and procedures.
- Experience with GIS data collection and map generation.
- Proficient with MS Windows OS and Office software including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Experience working on military installations is desired, but not required.
- Experience working in southeastern Colorado is desired, but not required.
- Physical ability to conduct day-long fieldwork walking across varying terrain carrying equipment and under extreme weather conditions.
- A valid state driver’s license, clear drug screen, and the ability to pass a government background investigation/obtain favorable National Agency Check with Investigation (NACI).
