JOB DESCRIPTION: The General Academic Counselor will provide comprehensive counseling services to a diverse student population, assisting students in navigating their academic, personal, and career goals. This role requires a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring that students from historically underrepresented groups receive the support and resources they need to succeed. The counselor will collaborate with faculty and staff to develop, coordinate, and implement academic, career, and personal counseling services, and will assist with the continued development and improvement of the Counseling department.We anticipate the first round of interviews to be conducted in person the week of May 7, 2025. Second round interviews are tentatively set for late May. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Academic Counseling & Educational Planning: Develop and maintain Student Educational Plans (SEPs) for Solano Community College students.Assist students in selecting courses, selecting majors, and meeting graduation requirements.Support students with transfer processes, including researching transfer requirements for UC, CSU, and private universities.Evaluate student progress, providing feedback and making adjustments to SEPs as needed.Career/Vocational Counseling: Assist students with career exploration, offering job-seeking strategies and identifying opportunities based on students' interests and the labor market.Administer career assessment tools and provide guidance on career decision-making.Stay informed about current labor market trends to provide relevant career advice.Personal Counseling: Provide culturally responsive personal counseling to address issues such as interpersonal relationships, decision-making, academic stress, and family concerns.Assist students with challenges related to health, mental well-being, and social or economic barriers.Offer crisis intervention and connect students to campus and community resources for extended support.Program Development and Outreach: Plan and implement outreach activities to recruit and retain SCC students, including visits to high schools, information sessions, and community events.Participate in student success workshops, including those focused on study skills, time management, and college success strategies.Serve as a liaison between SCC students, college departments, and external organizations to ensure students have access to the full range of services available.Develop and organize cultural activities, workshops, and field trips aimed at enhancing student engagement and community-building.Instruction and Educational Support: Instruct Personal Development courses for SCC students, developing and delivering a curriculum that is inclusive and equity minded.Maintain records of student progress, grades, and attendance for courses taught.Incorporate best practices in teaching and counseling to support diverse learning styles and backgrounds.Collaboration and Faculty Involvement: Work closely with faculty to ensure students receive the academic support they need.Participate in departmental and college-wide meetings and committees.Engage in professional development activities to stay current on counseling practices and educational trends.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Strong commitment to equity and inclusion in academic counseling services, with a focus on supporting students and addressing their unique needs.Skilled in utilizing a variety of counseling techniques to provide academic, personal, and career guidance, with a focus on the diverse needs of students, including first-generation, low-income, and other underserved populations.Experience in providing individual and group counseling services to students, fostering student success, retention, and completion in alignment with goals.Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus services to create a supportive, inclusive, and integrated student support network for students, ensuring seamless coordination between counseling, tutoring, mentoring, and other student services.Proficiency in student success strategies, including developing and implementing personalized educational plans, monitoring student progress, and providing early intervention for at-risk students.Experience in outreach, recruitment, and retention efforts specific to the needs of Solano Community College students, with a commitment to enhancing visibility and participation in alignment with college strategic goals.Willingness to participate in special events, including workshops, orientations, and outreach activities designed to promote services and build a sense of community among students.Commitment to professional development, including the willingness to engage in continuous learning about best practices in counseling, equity-driven strategies, and program administration.Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and empathetically with students from diverse backgrounds, addressing their academic, personal, and career-related concerns.Experience in shared governance and collegial decision-making at the departmental or college level, with an understanding of the participatory governance structure at California community colleges.Self-awareness and capacity for self-evaluation, with a demonstrated ability to reflect on and improve counseling practices based on feedback and student outcomes to better meet the needs of the student population.WORK ENVIRONMENT: The successful candidate will work in an office environment within the Counseling department, utilizing technology to manage student records and provide remote counseling services. The role may require occasional evening or weekend hours, as well as participation in meetings and workshops across multiple campuses and online formats. Frequent use of online meetings using Zoom or Microsoft Teams with webcam on. Phone and email will be required to communicate with all campus communities.
