Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive orientation and mobility assessments for students with visual impairments or blindness.
- Develop and implement individualized mobility plans tailored to each students needs and abilities.
- Teach students essential mobility skills, including cane techniques, spatial awareness, route planning, and environmental navigation.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to integrate mobility instruction into the students educational program.
- Conduct regular progress evaluations and adjust instruction plans as needed to ensure student success.
- Advocate for accessibility and accommodations to promote inclusivity within the school environment.
- Stay informed about the latest developments in orientation and mobility techniques, assistive technology, and educational resources.
- Bachelors degree in Orientation and Mobility or a related field (Masters degree preferred).
- Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or eligibility for certification.
- Experience working with individuals with visual impairments or blindness in an educational setting.
- Strong knowledge of orientation and mobility techniques, including proficiency in teaching cane skills and spatial concepts.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
- Dedication to promoting independence, confidence, and self-advocacy in students with visual impairments or blindness.
