Requirements

  • Education:
    • Master's degree or higher in School Psychology, or a closely related field.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    • Licensed as a School Psychologist in the state of Connecticut.
    • Certification by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) is preferred.
    • Valid state-issued teaching certificate or specialist-level certification (if applicable).
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience as a school psychologist in an educational setting preferred.
    • Experience working with students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds is desirable.
Job Summary

As a School Psychologist, you'll play a key role in helping students thrive both academically and emotionally. You'll work closely with students, teachers, and families to create a supportive and positive learning environment. By providing psychological evaluations, offering counseling, and developing individualized strategies, you'll help students overcome challenges, manage their emotions, and achieve success in school. Whether you're guiding a child through a tough time or helping a teacher find effective strategies for the classroom, your work will make a meaningful difference in the lives of students every day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct psychological assessments and evaluations to identify student needs, strengths, and challenges.
  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities.
  • Provide counseling and crisis intervention services to students as needed.
  • Collaborate with educators, administrators, and parents to develop strategies for addressing students' academic, behavioral, and emotional concerns.
  • Serve as a consultant to teachers and parents on classroom management, student behavior, and other psychological concerns.
  • Facilitate psycho-educational group sessions on topics such as stress management, social skills, and coping strategies.
  • Provide professional development and training to school staff on topics related to mental health, psychological services, and special education.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, including IEP meetings, to assist in making educational decisions.
  • Conduct research on best practices in school psychology and integrate evidence-based strategies into interventions.

Skills And Competencies

  • Strong understanding of psychological principles, including assessment, intervention, and mental health support.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, including parents, students, teachers, and administrators.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in the practice of school psychology.
  • Knowledge of current educational practices, special education law, and best practices in the field of psychology.
  • Crisis management skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced and sometimes high-stress environment.

Working Conditions

  • This position requires working in a school environment with regular interactions with students, staff, and parents.
  • Occasional after-school or evening meetings may be required for IEPs and other events.
  • May require travel between school locations depending on the districts needs.
