Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Special Education Teacher to provide individualized instruction and support to students with a variety of learning needs. The successful candidate will develop and implement effective educational programs that align with each students Individualized Education Program (IEP), working closely with families, general education teachers, and support staff to promote academic and social success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with Connecticut state and federal special education laws.
  • Provide direct instruction, support, and interventions for students with diverse disabilities in both inclusive and specialized classroom settings.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to modify curriculum and differentiate instruction to meet the unique needs of each student.
  • Regularly monitor student progress through data collection and adjust teaching strategies as necessary to ensure the achievement of IEP goals.
  • Attend IEP meetings and work closely with families and school staff to support students growth and development.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough records of student progress, assessments, and IEP documentation.
  • Implement behavior management strategies to create a safe and supportive classroom environment.
  • Use assistive technology and other specialized tools to enhance student learning and communication.
  • Ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and other relevant regulations.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in special education.

Qualifications And Requirements

  • Education:
    • Bachelors or Masters degree in Special Education or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Certification:
    • Valid Connecticut State Teaching Certification with an endorsement in Comprehensive Special Education (065) or Comprehensive Special Education (165) for PreK-12, issued by the Connecticut State Department of Education.
    • Passing scores on the Connecticut Educator Certification Tests (Praxis II) for Special Education.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience working with students with special needs is preferred but not required.
    • Experience developing and implementing IEPs and working with students with learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, and other disabilities.
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of IEP development and implementation processes.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
    • Ability to differentiate instruction and use varied teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles.
    • Proficiency in using assistive technology and specialized education tools to support student learning.
  • Licensure & Background Check:
    • Valid Connecticut Special Education Teaching License.
    • Completion of a thorough background check, including fingerprinting, as required by the Connecticut State Department of Education.
