Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with Connecticut state and federal special education laws.
- Provide direct instruction, support, and interventions for students with diverse disabilities in both inclusive and specialized classroom settings.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to modify curriculum and differentiate instruction to meet the unique needs of each student.
- Regularly monitor student progress through data collection and adjust teaching strategies as necessary to ensure the achievement of IEP goals.
- Attend IEP meetings and work closely with families and school staff to support students growth and development.
- Maintain accurate and thorough records of student progress, assessments, and IEP documentation.
- Implement behavior management strategies to create a safe and supportive classroom environment.
- Use assistive technology and other specialized tools to enhance student learning and communication.
- Ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and other relevant regulations.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in special education.
- Education:
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Special Education or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Certification:
- Valid Connecticut State Teaching Certification with an endorsement in Comprehensive Special Education (065) or Comprehensive Special Education (165) for PreK-12, issued by the Connecticut State Department of Education.
- Passing scores on the Connecticut Educator Certification Tests (Praxis II) for Special Education.
- Experience:
- Previous experience working with students with special needs is preferred but not required.
- Experience developing and implementing IEPs and working with students with learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, and other disabilities.
- Skills:
- Strong understanding of IEP development and implementation processes.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and use varied teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles.
- Proficiency in using assistive technology and specialized education tools to support student learning.
- Licensure & Background Check:
- Valid Connecticut Special Education Teaching License.
- Completion of a thorough background check, including fingerprinting, as required by the Connecticut State Department of Education.
