Position Summary
This is skilled work in driving large capacity trucks used in transporting solid waste from transfer stations to the solid waste disposal sites. Drivers are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of trucks as well as making the necessary maintenance checks and completing required paperwork. Work requires the use of vehicle control skills sufficient to operate large trucks often in unfavorable weather conditions and heavy traffic.
Essential Functions & Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Operates large capacity trucks transporting solid waste from transfer stations to solid waste disposal sites.
- Operates and unloads tractor/trailer at disposal sites.
- Inspects equipment before starting, reports malfunctions to Supervisor, and field test equipment after servicing.
- Keep written records and reports of trips and quantities transported.
- Provides normal operator maintenance of equipment.
- Performs related work as required.

- Skill in driving large and medium sized trucks including tractor-trailer trucks.
- Proper use of the motor vehicle's safety system, including lights, horns, side and rear-view mirrors, proper mirror adjustments, fire extinguishers, symptoms of improper operation revealed through instruments, motor vehicle operation characteristics and diagnosing malfunctions.Drivers shall have knowledge of the correct procedures needed to use these safety systems in an emergency situation, e.g. skids and loss of brakes.
- Ability to operate tractor trailers in a safe and efficient manner on urban highways.
- Ability to read and understand DOT and other related regulations and complete required forms.
- Ability to follow prescribed instructions and work without constant supervision.
- Ability to communicate sufficiently and to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, to respond to official inquiries and customer inquiries.
- Ability to make entries on reports and records.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to work overtime.
- Ability to perform basic math; add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses
The ideal candidate possesses the education and experience listed below.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience driving large capacity commercial vehicles including tractor-trailers.
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

- Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A required with valid D.O.T. Certification. A 2-year Certification preferred.
