Summary : A Senior Heavy Equipment Technician is a highly skilled mechanic responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on complex heavy machinery, including engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical components, and other systems, often requiring advanced troubleshooting skills, ability to operate heavy equipment, train other mechanics and lend support when called upon while ensuring the safe and efficient operation of equipment on-site or industrial facilities; they typically have extensive experience in the field and are proficient in reading technical manuals and utilizing specialized diagnostic tools.
Essential Job Functions :
Complex Repairs : Diagnose and repair intricate mechanical issues across a variety of heavy equipment like excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, and forklifts, including engine overhauls, transmission replacements, hydraulic system repairs, and electrical system troubleshooting.
Preventative Maintenance : Perform routine inspections and maintenance tasks according to manufacturer guidelines, including fluid changes, lubrication, component checks, and adjustments to ensure optimal equipment performance and longevity.
Troubleshooting : Utilize diagnostic tools and technical knowledge to identify the root cause of equipment malfunctions, including analyzing error codes and system readings.
Parts Ordering and Management : Identify necessary parts for repairs, source them efficiently, and maintain inventory of common components.
Safety Compliance : Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures while working on heavy machinery, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
Documentation and Reporting : Maintain detailed repair records, work orders, and inspection reports, documenting parts used, and time spent on repairs.
Mentorship and Training : Provide guidance and on-the-job training to less experienced technicians / mechanics.
Field Service : Will be required to travel to job sites to diagnose and repair equipment in the field.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Required Skills, Abilities and Knowledge :
Technical Expertise : Extensive knowledge of diesel engine mechanics, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, transmissions, and heavy equipment components.
Diagnostic Skills : Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and interpret technical data.
Mechanical Aptitude : Strong hand-on skills with experience in welding, fabrication, and basic machining.
Safety Awareness : Commitment to safety protocols and procedures when working on heavy machinery / equipment.
Problem-Solving : Ability to analyze problems, identify potential solutions, and implement repairs effectively.
Communication Skills : Clear communication with supervisors, colleagues, and clients regarding equipment status and repair needs.
Education, Experience and Special Requirements :
Must have certification or training from major equipment manufacturers or dealers.
5 years’ experience in performing the full range of operations with fifth wheel tractor trailer trucks, bulldozer, landfill compactor, rubber tire loader, grinder, windrow turner and other types of heavy equipment.
Possess communication skills to promote the SWDA’s policy of goodwill to the general public at the landfill.
Possess a valid driver's license and meet the driver license requirements outlined in the SWDA Motor Vehicle Operations Policy. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may be required.
Willing to work non-standard hours when necessary.
Willing to provide personal hand tools.
Willing to travel to pick up parts and materials out of area.
Physical Requirements :

Use of hands and fingers to write, perform manual labor and use with tools.
Ability to lift, carry and / or move up to 100 pounds.
Frequently standing to complete daily tasks, sitting when driving and operating equipment, walking around inspection sites, carrying equipment and supplies, and using foot controls to drive trucks and operate equipment.
Frequently kneeling, crouching, crawling, and climbing when performing daily tasks and monitoring equipment; bending to connect parts or use tools and balancing when mounting and dismounting heavy equipment; Frequently pushing / pulling equipment, reaching for of handling tools and supplies.
Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as extreme heat or extreme cold, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals / wildlife, toxic / poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
