About the role:
The Lumber Procurement Specialist will be responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and purchasing high-quality hardwood lumber for our flooring production needs. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the lumber industry, including market trends, quality control, and supplier relationships, and will be able to manage inventory levels effectively to support production schedules.
The position will report to the Supply Chain Director.
Role Responsibilities:
- Leads the procurement strategy for Lumber Sourcing & Procurement.
- Research and identify dependable suppliers of hardwood lumber.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers.
- Negotiate pricing, terms, and contracts with lumber suppliers.
- Ensure the timely purchase of lumber to meet production requirements.
- Anticipate market changes while reporting on industry competitiveness, alternative supply sources, raw material cost, price trends, etc.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market trends and fluctuations in lumber prices.
- Monitor inventory levels and forecast future lumber needs based on production schedules.
- Identify and proactively manage potential risks in the lumber supply chain, such as price volatility, supply disruptions, or quality issues.
- Work closely with the production team to ensure consistent supply of materials.
- Track lumber orders and deliveries to ensure timely and accurate fulfillment.
- Assess the quality of incoming lumber shipments and ensure they meet company specifications.
- Assures supplier conformance with company specifications to meet flooring focus needs.
- Coordinate with quality control teams to identify and resolve issues related to product defects or inconsistencies.
- Address and resolve any issues with suppliers regarding quality, pricing, or delivery.
- Cost Management & Budgeting: Manage and control lumber purchasing costs to ensure budget compliance.
- Analyze purchasing trends and work to optimize cost efficiencies in the supply chain.
- Compliance & Documentation: Ensure all lumber purchasing activities comply with relevant regulations and company policies.
- Maintain accurate records of purchasing transactions, contracts, and deliveries.
- Maintain desired inventory levels by tracking material sourcing and consumption
- Prepare forecasts for lumber cost, inventory and strategic planning
- Develop and implement initiatives to maintain cost efficiency of lumber, while managing supply risk.
- Represent company at public and association events
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proven leadership skills and experience in the lumber industry.
- Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in designing and execution planning and procurement.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Up to 60%-day travel, 5% overnight travel.
Education and Experience
- 3-5 years’ experience as a Procurement or Purchasing Manager
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain or related area preferred
- NHLA Lumber Grader certification
- Experience in sourcing, price negotiation, material purchasing.
- Demonstrated knowledge of lumber practices and industry standards
Physical Requirements
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
- Suitable agility and stamina to permit negotiation of stairs, elevated work platforms, ladders and walking on uneven terrain.
- Ability to bend, stretch, or lift.
- Reading computer screens and other devices.
- NHLA Lumber Grader certification.
Salary : $70,000 - $80,000
