Job Summary: The objective of the Facilities, Transportation, and Safety Coordinator is to develop and implement an effective strategy and systems for district management of facilities, transportation, and safety for the Somerville Public Schools. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and working closely with the Director of Student Services, the coordinator serves as a liaison between district leadership, city officials, and community partners, contributing to a shared vision for success for the entire district.
The Coordinator supports all schools and various departments across the District by serving as the project manager for all functions and processes related to the three core areas. They are responsible for coordinating facility maintenance, contributing to long-term capital planning, managing transportation logistics, and updating and implementing safety protocols. The Coordinator oversees and is responsible for safe and inclusive facilities and SPS district-wide transportation needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
- Minimum of five (5) years leadership experience in education, experience working directly with elected officials, superintendents, district leaders, school board members, municipal management, non-profits and community representatives, strongly preferred.

Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership, support and strategic direction for all issues and procedures involved with school facilities, transportation, and safety.
- Ensure effective communication and collaboration among District leaders, City officials, and community organizations and coordinate interdepartmental collaboration when needed.
- Serve on the leadership team for the Massachusetts School Building Authority building project for the District.
- In collaboration with the Director of Student Services, facilitate emergency planning coordination and safety training across the District, including SPS extended learning programs.
- Lead key internal and external meetings across teams to drive accountability, address operational challenges, and facilitate resolution.
- Collaborate with the Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Department of Infrastructure and Asset Management (IAM) to support and track progress on all district capital improvements and maintenance-related tasks.
- Attend required meetings deemed necessary by the Superintendent and/or the Chief Financial Officer in order to accomplish the objectives of the position and for professional growth.
- Provide support, feedback and direction for the Superintendent’s executive leadership team including regular, clear, and concise reports on the status of facilities maintenance and capital improvements to be shared with the School Committee monthly.
- Coordinate the School Committee bi-annual report regarding the enhancement of learning conditions in SPS schools via facilities management and capital improvements.
- Recruit, hire, and supervise staff associated with the core functions of the role as needed.
- Collaborate with building and department administrators to ensure facilities, safety and transportation needs are being met, including safe departure and arrival at schools and programs.
- Develop, implement and evaluate standard operating procedures for transportation, safety and facilities in collaboration with administrators, Out of School Time providers and other relevant stakeholders.
- Support in-house review of consultant-generated analysis and reports on transportation, facilities and safety.
- Communicate proactively with constituents including families, staff and community partners on relevant matters.
- Leverage technology to track and monitor maintenance requests, engage in long-term capital planning, maintain databases, analyze reports, and more.
- Conduct training on safety, transportation and facilities; conduct facility walkthroughs to assess needs and support maintenance prevention.
- Collaborate on budgeting for transportation, safety, and facilities, aligning resources with strategic priorities.
- Perform other reasonable duties as directed to support operational excellence.
