Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Dog Training Apprentice to join our team. As a Dog Training Apprentice, you will work alongside experienced trainers to develop hands -on skills in positive reinforcement training techniques. This role is designed for individuals passionate about canine behavior and eager to learn the fundamentals of dog training in a professional setting. You will assist in training sessions, observe and support trainers, help educate clients, and gain experience in handling dogs of various breeds and temperaments. This position is ideal for someone looking to grow into a professional dog trainer while contributing to a team dedicated to enhancing the bond between dogs and their owners.
Responsibilities
- Assist lead trainers in private lessons, group classes, and day training sessions.
- Observe and practice positive reinforcement training techniques under supervision.
- Support trainers in educating clients on canine behavior, training methods, and best practices.
- Handle and work with dogs of various breeds, sizes, and temperaments in a safe and controlled manner.
- Set up and maintain training areas, ensuring they are clean, organized, and properly equipped.
- Track and document each dog’s progress in training programs.
- Assist with socialization exercises, enrichment activities, and confidence-building exercises for dogs.
- Learn and apply training methodologies, including leash handling, basic obedience, and behavior modification techniques.
- Communicate effectively with clients and staff to support training goals and ensure a positive experience.
- Continuously expand knowledge of dog behavior, training techniques, and industry standards through hands-on experience and educational opportunities.
Qualifications
- Passion for working with dogs and a strong interest in learning positive reinforcement training techniques.
- Prior experience handling dogs in a professional or volunteer setting is preferred but not required.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and confident when working with dogs of various breeds, sizes, and temperaments.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with trainers, clients, and team members.
- Willingness to learn, take direction, and apply feedback from experienced trainers.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Comfortable working in an active, fast-paced environment with exposure to barking, dirt, and potential dog hair or dander.
- Ability to observe and recognize canine body language to ensure safe handling and training practices.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, based on training class schedules.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional growth in the field of dog training.
