Position Summary

The Laboratory Specimen Processing Technician plays a vital role in ensuring smooth laboratory operations through meticulous data entry and assistance with laboratory procedures. This position is crucial for maintaining our high standards of quality control, quality assurance, and safety compliance.

Location : Austin, TX

Shift : Tuesday-Saturday (6 am-2 : 30 pm)

Key Responsibilities

  • Departmental Program Maintenance (20%) :

Maintain and update specimen processing and data entry protocols.

  • Oversee quality assurance and quality control measures.
  • Adhere to safety standards, including OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen guidelines.
  • Specimen Processing and Data Entry (50%) :

    • Execute laboratory procedures for specimen handling accurately.

  • Identify appropriate containers, transport media, and storage conditions for various test types.
  • Evaluate specimen acceptability and consult with colleagues as necessary, taking appropriate actions.
  • Accurate and timely data entry into the laboratory information system (LIS).
  • Recognize and act upon LIS alerts and flags.
  • Resolve issues stemming from unclear requisition information.
  • Address basic customer inquiries and seek guidance when necessary.
  • Professional Interactions (20%) :

    • Communicate effectively with coworkers to uphold work quality.

  • Foster a positive workplace atmosphere.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and client information.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures at all times.
  • Miscellaneous Duties (10%) :

    • Complete additional responsibilities in a timely manner as assigned.

    Qualifications

  • Education :

    • Required - High School Diploma or GED

  • Preferred - Bachelor's degree in a biological science or certification in a medical technician / technologist program
  • Experience :

    • Minimum two years of laboratory experience in specimen collection and processing.

  • Data entry experience in a production setting.
  • Skills :

    • Ability to analyze and interpret technical documents.

  • Proficient in writing clear, concise clinical communications.
  • Skilled in data analysis using statistical methods.
  • Effective communication skills at all levels of the organization.
  • Proficient typing skills with 10-key operation.

    • Licensure / Certification : None required.

    Scheduled Weekly Hours : 40
