What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operations Information Systems Technician position at Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit?
Under direction, provides professional and technical support for District Operations Technology systems and infrastructure. Provides general information systems support for a diverse range of computers, server hardware and software, network systems, security, and communication systems and equipment; and performs related duties as assigned. This position is the primary IT support for the SMART Operations division.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a fully qualified journey-level classification responsible for independently performing professional and technical duties in support of the District’s information technology programs including end-point configuration and management. Positions at this level exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Ø Assists in project management and contract management; manages and directs scope of work projects, quality of services performed, and budget; coordinates and drafts RFPs, reviews applications, and recommends service contractors that best meet the District’s needs.
Ø Designs, develops, reviews, and analyzes new and existing reports in support of existing or new business needs; prepares and presents routine reports; analyzes trends and recommends adjustments.
Ø Performs system administrator and project management functions for the District wide Radio system that ties into state emergency network and other rail services, including programming radios, conducting training, and overseeing system maintenance; designs, develops, modifies, documents, troubleshoots, installs, and tests radio programs for use on handheld, and mounted mobile radios; collects, distributes, and performs inventory management; programs radios individually as part of a system wide integrated land mobile radio system; installs and maintains voice recording system software for radio transmissions.
Ø Performs system administration functions across disparate platforms; installs, configures, maintains, and upgrades operating systems and software packages, servers, network and data communication systems, personal and mobile computing systems and equipment, audiovisual equipment, and related technologies.
Ø Performs project management functions and provides technical support for train station network, Wi-Fi, and security cameras for the train stations, grade crossings, tunnels, bridges and other station amenities.
Ø Installs and maintains network workstations and software; configures, installs, and tests network interface adapters and connects new clients to existing networks; isolates and repairs basic network communications problems at the personal computer, network hub, and host locations.
Ø Receives and evaluates requests for service, diagnoses problems, troubleshoots and implements remedial actions; develops, records, and researches documentation for determining solutions, and resolves problems with hardware, software, security and access controls, and systems issues; escalates issues to specialized or higher-level staff and/or vendor for resolution as appropriate. Completes or escalates IT tickets as appropriate.
Ø Maintains and supports active directory services by adding, removing, and/or editing users and devices; creates access rights for users and user groups; creates groups and mailing lists.
Ø Participates in server setup and maintenance including installing equipment, applications, and updates and testing new systems to ensure server function.
Ø Coordinates installation and moves with user departments; configures workstations; connects new or moved workstations to existing network.
Ø Instructs users in software applications usage, basic computer navigation, and security policy.
Ø Maintains asset information on scheduled system maintenance, including upgrades and outages; informs customers as needed.
Ø Writes and maintains user and technical operating instructions and documentation; provides training to users and advises on best practices.
Ø Monitors and tracks software license and renewals.
Ø Recovers computer, video, radio, and communication assets; evaluates and repurposes viable hardware or decommissions obsolete hardware; maintains inventory system.
Ø Maintains and provides technical support for audiovisual and video conferencing systems and equipment.
Ø Performs incident management of service requests, including ensuring requests are assigned to appropriate staff, following-up with staff and customers on status of requests, ensuring requests are completed, and updating status in system upon completion.
Ø Obtains quotes, ordering, receiving, and inventory management for equipment and software.
Ø Performs related duties as assigned.
