Job Summary:
The Infection Prevention Nurse has the overall responsibility for identifying, preventing, and controlling the spread of infections within the hospital. This individual is one who is interested in infectious diseases and surveillance.
Education, Training, Licenses, and Experience Required:
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Current license by the California State Board of Nursing - Licensed Vocational Nurse.
Experience Preferred:
- Minimum one year of nursing management experience related to the job specification.
- Five or more years of nursing experience preferred.
- One (1) year of experience in acute care infection prevention is preferred.
- Experience includes epidemiologic principles and infectious disease; decontamination and sterilization, sanitation, disinfection practices; adult educational principles; and patient care practices.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required:
Organizational ability to plan, implement, and evaluate activities related to Infection Prevention. Cooperates with interdisciplinary staff to maintain a well-organized facility. Professional decorum always. Willingness to accept direction from CNO, ACNO, DON, or Administrator. Maintains tactful and cheerful relationships with patients, visitors, and staff. Must speak, read, write, and comprehend English. Must respect patient confidentiality. Participates in In-service Education programs.
Infection Prevention Supplemental Job Duties:
- Performs Surveillance
- Meets CDC/NHSN reporting deadlines.
- Meets CDPH quarterly data reporting requirements.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates the MRSA Surveillance Program
- Collaborates with engineering on projects, and co-signs project documentation.
- Reports to Sonoma County Public Health all “Reportable Diseases” and records in PDH log.
- Orients new staff and students:
- Participates in Education Days. (Annually).
- Participates in Skills Days. (Annually).
- Monitors hand hygiene surveillance program. (Monthly).
- Initiates inpatient and outpatient preoperative showering/skin preparation programs for all surgical patients.
- Monitors linen service. (QI) (Monthly).
- Develops and/or updates IP Annual Plan and policies and procedures. (Annually and PRN)
- Collects and presents data for the IP committee every other month.
- Evaluate new products and bring them to product review and IP committee.
- Actively participates in PDH’s Emergency Preparedness Program.
- Investigates endemics, epidemics, and pandemics.
- Notifies appropriate staff of investigative results and follows through with action plans and corrective measures.
- Evaluates service and therapy animals in the hospital environment.

- Clinical Practice Council
- Infection Prevention
- Antibiotic Utilization Committee
- Quality Council
- Medical and clinical staff meetings, PRN
- Assures that IP meets regulatory multiple agency standards.
