Sonos is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Co-Op to join our Product Development Team to support the mechanical design, prototyping, fabrication, and validation of components, assemblies, fixtures, and test samples. The primary responsibility of the position is to provide hands-on Mechanical Engineering support to the Sonos ME Team with a focus on New Product Development.
This role is located on-site at our Boston office
This position is office-based, meaning regular in-person collaboration or use of office equipment is essential to maximize effectiveness for this position. Qualified applicants must live within commuting distance of our Boston office location and should expect to be in office a minimum of 4 days per week.
What You'll Do
CAD Development of Components, Assemblies, and Jigs/Fixtures.
Design and development of components, assemblies, and fixtures to support testing in the areas of Acoustic, Thermal/Structural, Radio & Antenna, UI/UX, and Industrial Design.
Work with internal lab resources and external suppliers on fabrication of components where methods of manufacture may include:
3D Printing & Rapid Prototyping
CNC machining
Injection/Compression Molding, Diecasting, and Extrusion with Quick Turn and Mass Production Suppliers
Prototype product build support which may include:
Procurement and tracking of materials to support small scale development builds.
Design and fabrication of jigs/fixtures to support product assembly.
Hands on construction of prototype product.
Rework and reconfiguration of prototypes to support cross functional testing.
Development of custom configurations of products to support System Software and Electrical Engineering development.
What You'll Need
Basic Qualifications
AA in ME, OR Completion of 2 years (60-70 units) at a 4/5 year university in a similar field while continuing to actively pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering, OR recent ME graduate.
Fundamental interest in and curiosity of all things mechanical, how they are designed, and manufactured.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to collect and present technical data to the development community.
Open and willing to initiate peer review of one's work.
Ability to work in a highly diverse, cross functional team.
This role requires commuting distance to our engineering office in Boston. Qualified candidates are expected to be in our office at least four days a week.
Preferred Qualifications
Technically inquisitive - must be able to take on new technical challenges, learn new technical skills on-the-fly and apply that knowledge to solve the issue at hand.
Well-developed reporting skills (written technical communications), including the ability to summarize complicated issues.
Hands on machining and/or fabrication skills
Demonstrated experience with 3D modeling tools, prior experience with Siemens NX 1980 and Windchill or Team Center
Demonstrated ability to execute development tasks independently with a "can-do" attitude.
Prior co-op or internship experience in a hardware development role.
