Summary: The Lifeguard is responsible for conducting operations at the pool, which include preventing and responding to emergency situations, maintaining and cleaning the pool facility, and providing customer service to the patrons of the pool for Sonterra Municipal Utility District's Parks and Recreation.
*This position runs in the summer, starting before Memorial Day and ending Labor Day.
Organizational relationships:
Reports to: Aquatic Coordinator, Pool Manager
Other: Works Closely with Aquatic Manager and other Parks and Recreation Staff
Essential Duties & Required Qualifications
- Prevents accidents and minimizes or eliminates hazardous situations.
- Recognizes & responds accurately to all emergency situations.
- Performs appropriate water rescues, as necessary.
- Communicates with management the need for additional assistance or equipment.
- Performs daily facility operational tasks.
- Observes and enforces all facility rules and regulations pertaining to staff and patrons.
- Educates staff & patrons and informs them of the purpose/need for rules and regulations.
- Attends in-service training.
- Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports logs & chemical testing.
- Assists with various pool maintenance functions such as cleaning the pool, surrounding deck areas, cleaning office and restroom facilities regularly.
- Assist Aquatics Coordinator with aquatic events.
- Responsible for handling questions and concerns from patrons and other MUD staff.
- Presents and maintains a professional appearance and demeanor, including wearing appropriate uniform or attire and exhibiting respect and enthusiasm as duties and responsibilities are carried out.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge and competency in American Red Cross Lifeguarding standards as well as facility specific emergency procedures for the Sonterra MUD Aquatics Department.
- Ability to function effectively under direct supervision and to develop effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to receive directions and to follow oral and written instructions.
- Exhibit professional work habits including reliability, dependability, creativity, and demonstration of enthusiasm for the job.
- Must be available to work irregular hours and at various intervals, including weekends, holidays, and evening hours.
- Must be able to work well with people of all ages and dispositions.
Qualifications and Experience
- Must be 15 years old
- Must pass a background
- No previous experience required
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Must hold a valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding with First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification or equivalent. (Must have the ability to obtain before the start of employment.)

Physical Demands
- While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear, taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Working Conditions
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and sometimes extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
Candidate Additional Information:
- Interviews for this position will take place in April and early May. You must be signed up for a lifeguard class at the time of the interview or have a current lifeguard certification.
