POSITION OVERVIEW: The Sorrel River Ranch Resort and Spa has a 175 acre edible garden/farm which provides farm-to-table organic produce to our restaurant and mercantile. Utilizing Permaculture design, organic inputs and building our soil for long term garden health are our main focus. The garden hosts activities for the resort guests and local residents. Gardener/Farmer position is an excellent opportunity for those who would like to learn about permaculture design, multiple ways of composting, irrigation, plant nomenclature and selection, organic standards and daily garden operations. The garden team works outside all day in all the elements with the stunning red cliffs of Moab surrounding them. The Garden is looking for someone who enjoys manual labor, loves to learn every day, and thrives working with others. As team members of the resort we are sometimes needed to help in other departments or with events. With Garden being under the maintenance and grounds department during slow periods you'll be asked to perform Grounds andmaintenance tasks. The garden provides a guest experience at the resort. Organization, cleanliness, and presentation of our growing spaces is top priority. This often involves sweeping, mopping, taking out the trash, moving furniture, cleaning windows and dusting in indoor grow spaces. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Part of the workday is general maintenance.
- Watering, monitoring irrigation systems.
- Keeping areas clean, pruned, raked and weeded.
- Moving compost and mulch.
- Fixing low tunnels
- Feeding and watering worms
- Preventative IPM practices etc.
- Starting seeds, propagation from cuttings,
- Building garden infrastructure (trellises, compost tea system, planter boxes, etc.)
- Transplanting, sheet mulching, amending beds,
- Setting up irrigation in new zones,
- Property beautification thru landscaping, growing plants for landscaping purposes, planting trees etc.
- High school diploma or GED is required
- Bachelor's Degree is preferred
- Organic farming/ gardening experience is preferred however, a positive/solution-based attitude and a thirst for knowledge, is required
- Strong customer services skills to provide a wonderful experience at the Ranch
- Work well with a team with diverse personalities as well as independently
- Thrive under pressure
- Possess high ethical standards
- Lift 50 pounds.
- Stand for duration of the shift (8 hours )
- Withstand outside weather conditions (all elements)
- Bend, stoop, kneel, and reach with hands and arms
- Express and exchange ideas by means of the spoken word accurately, loudly and quickly
- Perceive the nature of sounds at a normal speaking level and make fine discrimination in sound
- Visual acuity to determine accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned
- Withstand a moderate noise level
