SUMMARY:
The Technical Sector Director is the leader of all technical services provided within their designated area of the Transportation Tech Sector. Manage all technical services within their designated area and serve SMA’s corporate client communities throughout all regions and offices. Also responsible for planning, designing, and directing projects locally and/or remotely on a corporate level. The position requires the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, design plans, and governmental regulations, as well as the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. These abilities must also translate into the effective presentation of information and response to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and drive systems that help reduce financial risk and liability, improve quality, improve efficiency, and improve profitability.
- Understand peer firm technical strengths and weaknesses and develop SMA staff appropriately to compare favorably in a competitive environment.
- Participate (directly or through coordinated delegation) in go/no-go and respond to resource allocation requests to provide the resources needed to opportunities identified through the Client Communities.
- Maintain knowledge of and proper utilization of technical services across the company; identify and mitigate gaps while also dynamically addressing inappropriate resources.
- Identify and mentor an immediate second to this position (i.e., succession planning).
- Ensure standardization across the Technical Sector, including technical specifications, budgets and estimates issued via the Client Communities and adherence to Project Management Planning systems.
- In cooperation with the Client Communities (CC) Directors, oversee the development of templates (where appropriate) and procedures for determining project technical approach, scope, budgets, and ensure leadership in project execution.
- In coordination with other Technical Sector Directors, CC Directors, and subordinate Technical Sector Managers (if any), identify and supportthe development of teaming/ subcontractor arrangements to provide the most efficient breadth and depth of technical resources in support of the CC activities.
- Provide advice, counsel, and peer review to ensure the technical appropriateness and accuracy of proposals In cooperation with the CAD manager, maintain proposer use of SMA CAD standards.
- Monitor the technical skills of team members; coordinate the hiring of highly qualified individuals and provide training opportunities to enable these individuals to successfully complete their assignments and develop professionally.
- In cooperation with the CIO, identify and develop technologies to achieve the goal of meeting and/or exceeding state-of-the-art for provided services.
- In cooperation with the Human Resources Manager, identify the trends and needs of the Technical Sector and strategically seek out new and experienced recruits to support the company’s technical expertise and leadership into the future.
- In cooperation with the CC Directors/Managers, identify and provide Technical Sector employees who can assist with external training and represent SMA to the public and potential clients as technical experts.
- In cooperation with the Marketing Manager, evaluate and coordinate the development of suitable marketing materials and standard proposal language for the Technical Sector, including internet and intranet materials.
- Recommend or identify disciplinary action or termination of direct reports (if any).
- In cooperation with the Health and Safety Manager, identify improvements for a safe working environment relative to the industry standards of the designated Technical Sector.
- Participate in overall Company planning relative to all company services and market sectors, and specifically related to the designated Technical Sector.
- Perform administrative functions such as reviewing and writing Technical Sector reports, recommending expenditures, and enforcing adherence to systems.
- Other general administrative duties related to employee skills building and retention, training, recruiting, and QA/QC.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, science, or technical field.
- Minimum ten years of experience post-graduation.
- Minimum four years of experience in a management position.
- Professional licensure required.
- Able to pass the drug/alcohol test and must have a valid driver's license.

Salary Grade: $123,000-$162,000 Per Year
