Description

This is a paid internship, range of $22 / hr - $39 / hr (depending on role and qualifications) for those currently pursuing undergraduate degrees and higher rates for those currently pursuing graduate level degrees.

  • DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

    Sound Transit's Systems Engineering and Integration division oversees design, integration and expansion of Systems related to multiple transportation modes throughout the Puget Sound region - Link, Sounder, ST Express, and Tacoma Link. The Systems Engineering Intern - Fire Protection will have an opportunity to be a part of the team that oversees our Fire Life-safety and Mechanical-Electrical Systems and learn how a large regional transit system is managed.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    JOB DUTIES :

  • Participate in technical and soft skills with the Systems Engineering and Integration team.
  • Collaborate with staff across the agency to ensure continuous improvement and best practice is applied to engineering criteria, policies, and procedures
  • Champion and model Sound Transit's core values and demonstrates values-based behaviors in everyday interactions across the agency
  • Contributes to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion in alignment with Sound Transit's Equity & Inclusion Policy
  • It is the responsibility of all employees to follow the Agency safety rules, regulations, and procedures pertaining to their assigned duties and responsibilities, which could include systems, operations, and / or other employees
  • POTENTIAL PROJECTS :

  • Review and catalog regulatory signage deployed in existing locations, with the intent to inform future design requirements.
  • Research gaseous fire suppression systems and inventory existing system type and agent used to inform future criteria new and retrofit application while considering effectiveness, maintenance, and new / emerging environmental rules.
  • Inventory of refrigerants used in HVAC equipment in order to associate with new / emerging environmental regulations for evolution and phase out of environmentally harmful refrigerants while considering refrigerant physical hazards, equipment compatibly, and maintenance considerations.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Applicants must be a current college student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited associate, bachelor's or graduate degree program in mechanical engineering, fire protection engineering, environmental engineering, chemistry, or other discipline or relevant two-year certificate.

    ADDITIONAL SKILLS :

  • Basic understanding of principles and practices in electrical engineering discipline
  • Basic troubleshooting, diagnostics and root cause analysis ability
  • Time management - ability to control workload, prioritize effort, and manage commitments
  • Collaboration - ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other agency staff, consultants, contractors, authorities having jurisdiction, and other stakeholder groups
  • Communication - ability to communicate clear and accurate technical information to technical and non-technical audiences in verbal and written form
  • Meeting management - Able to plan, conduct and record effective meetings
  • Systems thinking - ability to understand the whole problem, seek different perspectives, and decompose complex problems into solvable elements
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT :

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.
