Description

This is a paid internship, range of $22/hr - $39/hr (depending on role and qualifications) for those currently pursuing undergraduate degrees and higher rates for those currently pursuing graduate level degrees.

Tentative 2025 Internship Dates:

  • Semester students: May 19th to July 25th
  • Quarter students: June 16th to August 22nd

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Sound Transit is engaged in the delivery of major capital development projects throughout the Puget Sound region: Link Light Rail, Sounder Commuter Rail, Bus Rapid Transit, ST Express Bus, and Tacoma Link. Program Controls staff works closely with departments across the agency to manage the budget, cost, schedule, and risk of projects in the planning, construction, start up and closeout phases. The Program Controls intern will have an opportunity to be a part of the discipline and learn how a large regional transit project is managed.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

This position is an excellent opportunity for a student to gain exposure to major transit construction and the core tenants of budget, schedule, and scope control. Additionally, you'll learn about how project data is collected, transformed, and analyzed to proactively identify project performance trends.

  • Project work breakdown structure.
  • Cost and budget monitoring and reporting
  • Support with project/contract expenditures and reports variances
  • Change management and contingency tracking
  • Payment processing and earned value analysis
  • Other duties as assigned.

POTENTIAL PROJECTS:

  • Participate in the approval and award process of a major construction project including project cost breakdown structure.

  • Participate in the development of project budgets, cashflows and Estimate at Completion.

  • Provide support in the development of project and program cost and schedule reporting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be a current college student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited associate, bachelor's or graduate degree program in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Architecture, Finance, or other technical discipline or relevant two-year certificate.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

  • Interest in transit construction
  • Interest in Business Intelligence applications within the Construction Industry
  • Strong communication skills, and ability to collaborate across disciplines
  • High attention to detail and data integrity

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of project controls, project and construction management
  • Familiarity with project cost accounting and work breakdown structure.
  • Familiarity with modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and statistical databases.

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.
