Description

This is a paid internship, range of $22/hr - $39/hr (depending on role and qualifications) for those currently pursuing undergraduate degrees and higher rates for those currently pursuing graduate level degrees.

Tentative 2025 Internship Dates:

  • Semester students: May 19th to July 25th

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Sound Transit has an exciting Station Access, Integration & Strategic Passenger Support internship available for the summer of 2025! This position may be eligible for remote or hybrid options. This is a greatopportunity for currently enrolledundergraduate or graduate students who want to observe and participate in real world application of their current field of study with a focus on Urban Planning. Students from diverse or underrepresented backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Supports the successful implementation of a major transit expansion programs including Link, BRT, ST Express, Sounder, and Tacoma Link.
  • Supports improved understanding of passenger access to Sound Transit's existing stations, including collecting data on pedestrian, bicycle, local transit, pick-up and drop-off, and parking modes of access.
  • Supports structured coordination with stakeholders and partner agencies around passenger access, bus-rail integration planning, and station area planning at and for light rail, BRT, commuter rail, and express bus service.
  • Performs policy analysis, data collection and analysis, and historical research.
  • Supports preparation of budget and cost analysis.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of strategies and supports coordination with other agencies to advance the Agency's long-term opportunities to expand, enhance, and integrate the regional light rail, commuter rail, bus rapid transit (BRT), and express bus systems with local services and each other.
  • Support the on-going planning and design of active Link extension projects.

POTENTIAL PROJECTS:

  • Design and lead a passenger access data collection effort to better understand how passengers get to Sound Transit stations.
  • Analyze existing and future Link light rail stations to better assess and document station area planning activities, and the condition, utilization and performance of passenger access facilities and services.
  • Analyze performance measures and regional transportation data to support Access, Integration & Strategic Passenger Support program activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be a current college student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited associate or bachelor's or graduate degree program in Urban Studies, Geography, Urban Planning, Urban Design or Landscape Architecture or other non-technical discipline or relevant two-year certificate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in a standard office and hybrid environment; some work will be performed at Sound Transit Stations and Transit Centers.
