Under the general supervision of the Executive Director, the Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of a building and the surrounding grounds. Their duties include cleaning floors, sanitizing restroom facilities, and collecting trash to ensure the building’s staff, volunteers, and guests have a clean space. The custodian may also unload food donations and deliveries, pick up grocery orders, and deliver meals to partner organizations.
- Adhere to policies, practices, behaviors, and organizational culture to advance SKOM's equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts.
- Prepare cleaning stations with the required equipment and chemicals, to include the Safety of Chemicals MSD sheets.
- Check inventory for cleaning supplies and equipment – report to the Assistant to the Executive Director any items that need to be ordered.
- Set up cleaning buckets for kitchen surfaces, direct volunteers to clean all surfaces, and put away all air-dried pots, pans, and utensils.
- Restock any items that volunteers need to make sack lunches.
- Help the Kitchen Manager with any tasks needed to prepare food to be cooked and served for the day.
- Help the kitchen manager with tasks when short-handed.
- Check the dining room before the doors are opened at 8 a.m.; ensure that the bathroom is clean and available with supplies (toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, disinfected spray).
- Make sure tables are wiped down and ready for guests.
- Take out trash as needed, break down boxes, and bag all items for recycling.
- Clean tables between guests and carry out lunches to people who can’t make it downstairs.
- Periodically check the bathroom for cleanliness and clean one last time when serving is over.
- Fill in supplies as needed during the morning cooking and serving. Spray pans for washing as needed.
- Remove all trash, sweep and mop the dining room and bathroom, and wipe all surfaces in the dining room and bathroom.
- Put away any items that were delivered in storage.
- Clean the coffee pot and assemble it for the next day. Clean all the other drink dispensers so they are ready for set up the next day.
- Help in the kitchen to finish dishes, check that all surfaces have been wiped and sanitized, make sure all burners and ovens are turned off, and check all freezer and refrigerator temperatures. If necessary,
- Sweep and mop the kitchen floor.
- Report any needed items to the Kitchen Manager and any problems that must be resolved before leaving.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Represent the Soup Kitchen during food distribution hours and to the public, as well as during community activities, public events, and conferences.
The ideal candidate would have the following capabilities and qualities:
- High School diploma or GED/
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with initiative.
- Passage of a criminal background check and drug test before employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of two years custodial experience in a kitchen or concession.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the proper use and storage of tools and chemicals required in the custodial work in the kitchen, dining, and storage areas.
- Working knowledge of and ability to apply safety policies and procedures and adequately operate various industrial kitchen equipment, including, but not limited to, can openers, mixers, slicers, stoves/ovens, and other equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally with the Executive Director, co-workers, volunteers, and guests, including being sensitive to gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
- Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
This position is expected to be part-time at an average of 25 hours per week, with a competitive hourly wage, depending on experience. It will have regular hours from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday through Friday, yet some evening and weekend work will be required. The Custodian will be eligible to receive a stipend for health care, paid sick leave, and vacation time. The Custodian will report to the Executive Director.
The Custodian performs duties involving driving, lifting/carrying objects up to 50 pounds, bending, and kneeling. The Custodian will be reimbursed for mileage for using a personal vehicle.
