Essential Functions and Responsibilities (other related duties may be assigned):
The following are typical duties and responsibilities.
- Provides support services and instructional tutoring to assigned student(s)
- Work with students in small groups to tutor, reinforce or follow up on learning activities
- Assists by guiding students and/or providing a model in a variety of areas;
- Assists in physical development and fitness, communication, personal hygiene (i.e.
feeding, grooming, toileting), academic learning and vocational skills
- Uses established guidelines as a pattern to individualize instruction to needs of learner
- Assists in the general supervision of the classroom, outdoor playground, community
mobility and field trip activities
- Assists with classroom preparation and clean up
- Provides for protection and safety to all students assigned
- Working with students who may be aggressive or disruptive in class
- Behavior support which includes physical management
- Implement Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIPs) as written in the IEP
- Assist students in following classroom schedule
- Record and summarize data as directed by the special education teacher
- Maintain daily communication with special education teacher
- Assist in the modification/accommodation of classroom work according to the individual
student’s IEP
- Assist the special education teacher in providing appropriate individualized services to
assist students in their inclusionary services
- Maintain confidentiality of student information

- Communicate effectively via telephone, computer modem and in person
Knowledge of:
- Learning patterns and behavior
- Basic concepts of child development and behavior characteristics
- Personal hygiene and mental health practices
- Reading and writing in English, including grammar and composition
- Classroom computer and other technical equipment
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or comparable demonstration of basic competence
- Requires an AA degree, and a minimum of two years of college training, 48 semester
units, or passage of the HCOE Instructional Assistance Aide test which demonstrates
competency and the ability to assist students in the instruction of reading, writing, and
mathematics
- One year of paid or voluntary experience working with children. Two years of college
training related to psychology, child development or education may be substituted for
one year of experience working with children
- Training or experience working with special needs children is desirable.
License, Certificate and Testing Requirement:
- TB Test Clearance
- Criminal Justice Fingerprinting Clearance
Working Conditions:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; some reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 45% walking, and 35% standing.
