South Bay Youth Changemakers is a fiscally sponsored project of Chinese Progressive Association.


SBYC seeks a passionate, collaborative leader with a commitment to building youth organizing and movement infrastructure in the South Bay. The Lead Youth Organizer reports to the Co-Directors to run basebuilding, leadership development, and campaign work to implement SBYC’s strategies. 


Responsibilities

The following responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel classified in this manner. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice. 

  • Organizing Training and Youth Political Education (25%): Facilitate workshops and develop curriculum to cultivate members’ knowledge and skills in political analysis and power building. Manage youth involvement in organizing campaigns, actions, and/or projects related to youth participatory action research, civic engagement, and local issues facing the Asian-American community in the South Bay. Scaffolds “the youth cut” of multi-generational community issues to facilitate youth leadership in broader community campaigns.
  • Basebuilding (30%): Lead recruitment drives (through 1:1s, presentations, and direct outreach) for new members and establish and operate school chapters. Develop and implement retention strategies. Cultivate relationships with school staff to build presence at school sites.
  • Youth Leadership Development (30%): Build relationships with youth members and invest in their growth along our leadership pathway, with an emphasis on 1:1s for youth development. Develop and implement structures and processes to support members’ personal transformation in their organizing training, including evaluation and peer feedback. Facilitate youth movement up the ladder of engagement so youth can grow in autonomy and increased decision-making within the organization.
  • Movement Building (10%): Represent SBYC when attending events and conferences, collaborating with movement partners, and participating in strategy spaces. Build and maintain relationships with local alliances, coalitions, and key organizers.
  • Database Management, Documentation, and Reporting (5%): Manage database of youth, volunteers, school contacts, and community partnerships. Develop documentation for institutional knowledge and reports for grant and contract requirements. 


Essential Qualifications:

  • 2 years relevant experience in organizing or movement work
  • Holds a commitment to political and personal development of young people
  • Experience with two or more of the following: developing/facilitating popular education curriculum, designing organizing trainings and leadership development programs, basebuilding
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple demands and prioritize 
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take on new challenges. Readily develops solutions to address emergent challenges
  • Adapts to the evolving needs of the organization and grounds the day-to-day operation of the organization in the longer term vision and strategy
  • Ability to make political and organizing capacity assessments
  • Self-motivated and can move the work independently
  • Willingness to invest in personal transformation through conflict, feedback, accountability, asking for help, principled struggle, etc.
  • Approaches social justice and organizing with a bigger picture orientation to movement building 


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience building authentic, transformative relationships with high school aged youth
  • Experience with strategic communications and/or managing social media and newsletters
  • Experience with running grassroots organizing campaigns and integrated voter engagement programs


Work Environment / Physical Demands

  • This position is hybrid remote, with the option to work remotely or in-person, with required in-person work a few times a month in Santa Clara County. 
  • This position will require the ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and occasional weekends. 
  • This position will require the ability to work with mostly virtual documents and virtual workspace platforms (GDrive, Slack, etc.)
  • This position requires working remotely with a computer, a phone, and reliable internet,, including sitting / standing at a desk for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation
  • This position requires the ability to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds; the ability to see or read a computer screen and printed material; the ability to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in-person and be understood by others; and the ability to hear and understand speech, including on the phone with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Given the auto-centric nature of Santa Clara County, the ability to drive and access to a car is necessary


Employment Terms

Note: SBYC follows a 32-hour work-week instead of the traditional 40-hour work-week to support our sustainability and effectiveness.


This position works 32 hours per week at $42.07-43.57/hr. This position has an estimated salary range of $70,000- $72,500, depending on experience. This position is non-exempt. We offer a competitive benefits package that includes: medical, dental, vision, and a generous paid time off schedule. 


The ideal start date is May 2025.
