Job Summary:
This position is designed to be an ambassador for the Aquarium through a variety of on-site, off-site and virtual educational programs. Duties include teaching curriculum-based school programs, participating in offsite outreaches, leading virtual programs, supporting daily education and interpretive programs, and engaging with guests.
The main duties of this position will be teaching school programs, outreach and camps. In addition to responsibilities listed above, this position will have a focus on new programming at the Boeing Learning Lab.
Essential Functions:
- Adhere to the South Carolina Aquarium Policies.
- Teach K-12 school programs for groups of visiting students.
- Participate in outreach programs.
- Teach different types of virtual programming.
- Help with new programming coming to the Boeing Learning Lab
- Participate in Science at Sunset programs.
- Upkeep the Aquarium's Onsite Activity Kits for schools and homeschools.
- Help with online curriculum development.
- Provide an exceptional visitor experience for all guests.
- Engage guests through daily shows, guided tours, and gallery interpretation.
- Assist in member and community programs.
- SCA 1st Responder
- Other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Preferred knowledge of SC science standards.
- Skills to provide exemplary teaching methods to K-12 students.
- Ability to work with audiences of all ages.
- Comfort in leading different types of virtual programs.
- Organization and creative skills to create new programs and update education materials.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Outstanding interpretive skills.
- Must be able to give interpretive talks to groups of 10-200 people.
- Must be a team player and self-motivated.
- Ability to maintain a sense of humor.
- Must be able to handle live animals.
- Professional image required.
- Must have or gain a working knowledge of Aquarium exhibits and animals.
- Ability to work early mornings and evenings.
- Ability to work weekends as needed.
- Other tasks as needed by the Education team.
Education & Experience Required:
- Bachelor's Degree in science, interpretation, education or related field.
- Minimum of three years of combined education and experience in interpretive field.
Licenses & Certifications Required:
- Valid Driver's License
- First Aid, CPR and AED Training
Physical Requirements:
Often standing, carrying up to 50 lb, driving, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, climbing ladders, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, lifting, crawling, computer and phone tasks.
Working Conditions:
Normal office environment, public contact, early morning and late night shifts, some weekend work, required to wear a radio and outdoor work required.
