It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.

Job Purpose

SCDJJ provides work experience, employment skills and job training to youth within the secure facilities. The Work Program Instructor will provide instructional services and oversight for the youth workers in the Facility Youth Work Programs as these youth work and create products for the Agency's Store of Hope.

Job Responsibilities

Provides hands-on instruction to youth at DJJ in learning all aspects of the assigned trade with a specific emphasis on teaching the youth how to make products that will sell in a retail environment.

Provides instruction in how to operate and use all machinery, tools and equipment so that youth learn work skills and safety practices in the vocational setting.

Inventory equipment and tools regularly and ensure adequate supplies and equipment are safely maintained and in place and including providing all necessary reports to management regarding program information.

Maintain the designated number of work program students by coordinating with the Facility Administrator and Director of Facility Programs.

Work closely with the Store of Hope Manager by providing needed information about costs of creating products and assisting with marketing events.

Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma and relevant program experience.

Additional Requirements

Must be able to demonstrate practical applications of creating products or services (preferably upholstery or carpentry/woodworking preferred) and have experience and knowledge in instructional practices, methods, strategies, to include workshop/classroom management based on positive reinforcement.

Have good observation skills.

Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the designated trade.

Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials used in the trades.

Knowledge of techniques, methods, requirements and practices used in the designated trade.

Maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to a work a flexible schedule to include Saturdays as needed.

This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the Jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
