Job Responsibilities
At the West Columbia Section Shed of Lexington Maintenance, operates a tandem dump truck to haul debris and asphalt. Verifies the gas and follows preventive maintenance program daily. Ensures the tarp is in place and all loose materials are removed from the sides of the truck and tail gate before operation begins. Operates the Injection Patcher, trailer mounted, in a safe and efficient manner. Ensures proper preventative maintenance is done in accordance with SCDOT Fleet Safety and manufacturers operation manual. Patches pot holes by cutting out area, adding tac and asphalt, then tamping for a good seal. Paves driveways and turning lanes using good techniques. Uses shovel and other hand tools to ensure the area is level and that all loose material has been removed. Sets up traffic control devices such as cones and signs for work zone safety to the South Carolina Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Flags traffic according to standards ensuring that all safety attire is worn at all times. Works with a crew in the installation of sideline, cross line, and driveway pipe. Cleans out ditches with a shovel and level ditch line before placing pipe. Ensures all pipe is laid to allow water to flow properly and that the pipe is sealed. Area should be dressed before leaving the job site. Ensures that all extra material and tools are picked up and placed back on truck. Assists to operate a combination backhoe and front-end loader to load materials needed in maintenance of bridges and roads. Works with a shovel, bush ax, chain saw, limb shipper, pole saw, and sling blade to clear site areas and right-of-way by hand to remove dead trees. Ensures all safety equipment is used when operating tools and equipment. Operates a mower/bush hog in clearing site hazards. Operates medium to heavy equipment as necessary during hazardous weather or other emergencies to ensure safety of the motoring public.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
