Position Summary • Under the direction of Registered Nursing, the sterile processing technician is responsible for decontamination, cleaning, assembling, inventory, and sterilizing surgical instrumentation. • Work performed aligns with establish guidelines, medical facility policies, as well as local, state, and federal requirements. • Assists licensed staff and physicians as directed within approved standards. • Performs other related duties as directed. • Works collaboratively with the health care team, is customer focused and strives to meet unit and hospital goals. • Provides quality care according to established practice standards and guidelines for the area(s) assigned. • Must be willing/able to float to other (comparable) nursing units, as requested/needed.
QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. • Candidates must be currently certified by IAHCSSM (International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management) or the CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) in sterile processing or obtain full certification within 6 months of hire. • High school graduate or equivalent • Current IAHCSSM or CBSPD certification in sterile processing or must obtain full certification within 6 months of hire • Successful completion of hospital service orientation program • Attends Skills Fair and completes yearly competency checklists • Must have current BCLS certification • Previous hospital experience preferred • Competently performs unit specific duties as assigned • Must utilize common sense and good judgment. • Must be able to adapt to varying patterns of supervision. • Must be able to perform duties accurately under stress. • Must perform duties within scope of practice and conforming to standards of practice. • Must have the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with physicians, patients and family members. • Discretion is required in handling confidential information. • Must be able to work irregular schedules, weekends, and holidays due to staffing and census fluctuations. • Physically able to turn up to 125 pounds (can lift up to 30 pounds) using appropriate body mechanics.
