Job Overview: Interventional radiology nurses help serve our mission by collaborating and communicating with various medical providers, assistive staff, and patients to develop a plan of care that optimizes patient outcomes. They are involved with every step in the perioperative process and provide specialized recovery care to help patients get home safer and happier.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Adheres to scope of RN practice as outlined by the MS Board of Nursing, regulatory standards and hospital policy.

3. Supervises and supports the LPN, Nursing Assistant, Nurse Tech, Behavior Health Techs and student.
4. Serves as positive role model and in the preceptor role for new staff and students.

6. Collaborates with physician and multidisciplinary team to address patient needs.
7. Appropriately seeks help or guidance from supervisor or other resource people.

Job Duties:
Interventional radiology nurse duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Inserting, maintaining, and removing intravenous lines for safe medication and contrast dye delivery as per hospital protocol.
• Reviewing allergies, patient history, and physical assessment findings with the patient and medical team prior to procedure.
• Performing and documenting ongoing assessments, including observation, physical examination, vital signs, laboratory/test results, and patient response to procedural intervention.
• Collaborating and communicating with radiologists, physicians and other medical providers, assistive staff, and patients to develop a plan of care that optimizes patient outcomes.
• Educating patients and family members about procedures, follow-up care, and post procedural discharge instruction.
• Occasionally assisting the radiologist during interventional radiology procedures. (Setting up supplies, passing guide wires and catheters, handing over instruments and supplies, etc.)
• Transporting patients for procedures and discharge.
• Overseeing patient safety and comfort before, during and after procedures.
• Administering conscious sedation drugs and other medications.
• Monitoring for and addressing intraoperative and postoperative complications. (Over sedation, cardiac arrhythmia, respiratory decompensation, acid/base imbalance, allergic reactions etc.)
• Notifying appropriate medical providers of any post-op complications or other abnormal findings and implementing appropriate treatment.
• Providing accurate and relevant documentation throughout the perioperative process.
• Removing gastrostomy tubes, drains, and peripherally inserted central catheters.
• Scheduling procedures that require sedation or medication management.
• Participates in the identification and clarification of patient needs, to achieve optimal patient outcomes, as well as implements the plan of care according to the identified physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs.
An Interventional Radiology Nurse plays a crucial role in patient care during interventional radiology procedures. Here are the key responsibilities and duties associated with this specialized nursing role:
1. Pre-Procedure Preparation:
• Assess patients by checking vital signs, reviewing medical and medication history, and obtaining and reviewing lab results.
• Obtain and document Pre-surgical checklist.
• Ensure patients understand the upcoming intervention and obtain informed consent.
• Obtain intravenous access peripherally or via chest mediport.
• Transport patient to procedure room
2. Intra-Procedure Support:
• Assist with positioning patient.
• Connect patient to monitor.
• Administer conscious sedation drugs and other necessary medications.
• Monitor patient vital signs throughout procedure and report any abnormalities to radiologist.
• Oversee patient safety and comfort throughout the procedure.
3. Post-Procedure Care and Documentation:
• Educate patients and their families about the procedure, follow-up care, and discharge instructions.
• Monitor patients after the procedure for any signs of complications (vital signs, dressing, drain output, etc).
• Document all details of the procedure including—procedure, equipment/supplies used, case attendance, time out, specimen collection, medications used, dressing, etc. Document all relevant information accurately.
• Discontinue intravenous access prior to discharge
• Discharge patient.
Interventional Radiology Nurses collaborate closely with radiologists and other healthcare professionals to deliver safe and effective care during complex procedures.
Qualifications:
Education
Required--Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing
Work Experience
Preferred- Interventional radiology or critical care experience.
Certifications
Required- Registered Nurse License in MS or Compact License, BLS certification, ACLS certification
