POSITION TITLE: Payroll Clerk (12 months)
REPORTING TO: Business Administrator
HOURS: 7.5 hours per day
CURRENT LOCATION: District Office
SALARY AND BENEFITS: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 starting salary range based on previous experience.
START DATE: ASAP
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains time records, card files, schedules, and payroll data;
- Gives routine information regarding departmental procedures orally or in response to telephone inquiries;
- Assists employees with problems concerning payroll, bereavements, work compensation time, jury duty, etc.;
- Resolves any errors in employees paycheck and reissues payment checks;
- Processes, records and files a variety of control records and payroll reports, for ledgers and claims;
- Compiles fiscal data and assists in preparing reports for financial statistical and budget purposes;
- May process information to facilitate the preparation of the payroll, including information pertaining to the separation of employees, their appointment, deductions/corrections, and tax matters, including the preparation and distribution of annual W-2 forms;
- Compiles and posts data to the computer system and reconciles all payrolls
- Pays all employees benefits including the reconciling of health, dental, credit union, union dues, United Fund, etc.;
- Enters payroll and benefits data into an financial database;
- Attends workshops on payroll procedures, changes, etc.;
- Does other tasks as assigned by a supervisor.
Job Qualifications
*PROVISIONAL APPOINTMENT*- Candidate must successfully complete the Albany County Civil Service Payroll Clerk exam when next given and be eligible for appointment to retain this position.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment;
Good knowledge of business English, and arithmetic;
Thorough ability to conduct payroll calculation procedures and time keeping tasks;
Ability to make simple arithmetic computation accurately;
Ability to operate a PC to process, record and store payroll data;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
Clerical aptitude;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER:
- At least thirty (30) college credit hours of business studies and six (6) months of office experience that included accounting-related duties; OR,
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience involving the application and explanation of rules, procedures and policies regarding the preparation and processing of payrolls; OR,
- Three (3) years of experience involving the application of rules, procedures and policies regarding the preparation and processing of payrolls.
