Description:

The South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) owns and operates the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF). The Industrial Radio and Control Technician is responsible for developing, installing, and managing aspects of surface and underground radio communication, programmable logic controllers, fiber optic and copper cabling.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The following reflects SDSTA’s definition of essential functions for this position and does not restrict other tasks that may be assigned. The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Radio Communications and Cabling Infrastructure

  • Installs, maintains and repairs radio communication systems.
  • Inspects communications equipment to ensure all systems are operating properly.
  • Conducts routine maintenance on equipment and communication networks.
  • Lays, splices, and terminates fiber optics and copper cabling infrastructure.
  • Tests fiber optic and copper cabling systems to ensure reliability and functionality.
  • Installs and terminates ethernet cable systems.
  • Works with networking staff to troubleshoot fiber and copper terminations and connections to networking equipment.

Process Control Systems

  • Installs, programs, and maintains Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) for various industrial applications.
  • Researches and recommends PLCs in building plans.
  • Conducts diagnostics and troubleshooting of PLC hardware and software issues.
  • Updates and modifies PLC programs as required to improve performance and accommodate process changes.
  • Works with Information Technology (IT) department to maintain access to SURF process control systems.

Industrial Electrical Systems

  • Installs (or assists installation) wiring, conduit, and electrical panels.
  • Repairs and/or replaces electrical components.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs industrial motor control systems.

Innovation and Improvement

  • Stay updated on industry trends and new technologies.
  • Suggest and implement improvements to existing systems.
  • Participate in continuous learning and professional development activities.

Other Essential Functions

  • Maintains consistent and reliable attendance.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Education

  • Associates degree or equivalent in Electronics, Automation and Controls, Telecommunications or related field preferred
  • Formal training in radio communications or industrial controls preferred

Certifications and Licenses

  • Relevant certifications (e.g. Journeyman Electrician, PLC Programming, Certified Fiber Optic Technician) are desirable

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience installing, programming, and maintaining Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and cabling infrastructure.
  • Experience working with radio communications and networking systems, both surface and underground preferred
  • Knowledge of fiber optic and copper cabling installation and maintenance
  • Experience working in underground environment a plus

Working Conditions

The working conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. When applicable and appropriate, consideration will be given to reasonable accommodations.

  • This position may require working in both surface and underground environments at depths up to 5000 feet, which may include exposure to extreme conditions, confined spaces, and varying temperatures.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderately loud when on the surface or underground, and may require hearing protection.

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety Standards protocols are mandatory.

Mental and Physical Demands

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and procedures.
  • High level of alertness to maintain compliance with safety protocols, especially in high-risk environments involving heavy equipment, electricity, or gas lines.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods.
  • Capacity to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate forklifts and other warehouse machinery.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
  • Repetitive movement of hands, arms and legs, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, pushing, wiping.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods
