Engineering Intern is a paid position that offers 40-50 hours per week during the summer months and can continue during the school year with around 10 hours of work per week. SDSP will work with the intern to create a schedule that works around the school schedule and does not sacrifice the quality of your schoolwork. The real work experience gained from this internship is a valuable opportunity that cannot be taught in the classroom. SDSP will go beyond offering a view of the work we are doing but give you the tools and opportunities to be a part of it. By the end of the internship, a successful intern will be able to: interface with engineering consultant firms; provide their own designs and solutions; order equipment and materials; hire contractors; manage appropriations approved by the management team; manage a project from fruition to completion. The internship has the potential to be renewed by SDSP for multiple semesters.

Primary Responsibilities
Under the direction and coaching of the engineering team, the intern will take on increasing responsibility as they build their skills in the following areas:
- Demonstrate good steward of company resources when purchasing materials, and scheduling contractors
- Design and develop processes and equipment specifications utilizing engineering skills and tools
- Take a proactive, solution-oriented approach to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve potential issues.
- Track costs, yields, quality, and process performance, discussing with and reporting to engineering team
- Develop and perform feasibility studies and cost estimates.
- Prioritize safety in all aspects of daily activities
- Manage projects and lead process improvements by determining priorities, scheduling, coordinating, and communicating with all stakeholders ensuring completion within time and budget projections
- Comply with SDSP's Safe Quality Food (SQF) food safety program and polices.
- Perform additional responsibilities as needed to support the team and overall organizational goals.
Basic Qualifications
- Currently Enrolled in a bachelor's program in the engineering field with a minimum of 3 semester's coursework completed.
- Excellent problem solving and analytical thinking skills with ability to prioritize, adapt and act.
- Effective and professional communication through speaking, writing, and listening.
- Recommendation from an Engineering Professor and a signed internship agreement. (if applicable)
- Must be able to drive and able to occasionally travel overnight for work purposes.
Must Possess the Ability to Do the Following Occasionally
- Bend, squat, and kneel
- Stand, walk, climb ladders/stairs
- Push/Pull/Carry/Lift 25-50lbs
- The majority of work is carried out in an office environment.
- Occasionally, the Engineering Intern may be exposed to excessive noise, dust or fumes, and marked changes in temperature
- Occasionally the Engineering Intern may work around moving machinery, high structures and confined spaces
