The Michael J. Fitzmaurice SD Veterans Home is a vital component of the SD Department of Veterans Affairs, serving the long-term care and independent living needs of South Dakota veterans. The Veterans Home Business Office team consists of a Business Manager, Accountant I or II, Accounting Assistants, and Senior Secretary.
The Business Office team is responsible for reviewing and approving financial information provided during the resident application process, setting up and managing resident trust accounts, billing residents for monthly maintenance charges and miscellaneous expenses, billing for Federal VA per diems, submitting Medicaid cost reports, facility accounts payable/receivable, and a variety of other business-related tasks.
The Accountant I or II is a full-time accounting position that reports to the Business Manager.
The position is responsible for:
- Assisting residents with financial needs.
- Medicaid cost reports and reimbursements.
- Assisting residents and their families with the financial information needed to submit for Medicaid.
- Billing the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs for Per Diem reimbursements.
- Internal cost analysis for multiple departments.
- Intra state accounts receivable and transfers.
- Internal bank and resident trust reconciliations.
- Calculating and invoicing resident rents.
- Ensuring Annual Comprehensive Financial Reporting (ACFR) compliance.
- Internal 1099 reporting.
- Data entry into State Mainframe system.
- Data entry and reconciliations of electronic medical record system.
- Other governmental reporting as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
Will consider an Accountant I-II. Accountant II level will require a 4-year accounting degree with 1-2 years of accounting experience.

- Microsoft Excel, Word, Query, and other desktop tools;

Ability to:
- learn applicable accounting software;
- prioritize and complete work by established deadlines;
- communicate sufficiently to answer questions and provide information about assigned work;
- maintain financial records and prepare financial reports;
- compare information and recognize discrepancies;
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with residents and their families, vendors, departmental officials, co-workers, and the public.
