Job Summary:
This is an exciting opportunity for those who enjoy working with the elderly and disabled. The Department of Human Services serves as legal guardian of last resort for individuals across South Dakota. These positions are responsible for visiting all individuals under the Department's guardianship, developing relationships to know and understand their wishes and preferences about decisions, ensuring their safety, communicating needs and requests, and providing required reports to the appointing courts.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- desire to work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the aging;
- excellent written and oral communication skills;
- willingness to travel year-round;
- strong organizational skills;
- high school diploma or GED.
Knowledge of:
- South Dakota services for the aging and those with disabilities is helpful, but not required;
- some medical knowledge is also helpful, but not required.
Skill to:
- visit and communicate with individuals who use alternative communication methods and style;
- write clear and concise communications about both emergency situations and routine updates;
- communicate with the rest of the Guardianship team to ensure the best possible services to protected people;
- draft appropriate status reports to the courts;
- provide well thought-out recommendations as to serious life decisions, including medical decisions, for protected people.
Ability to:
- reprioritize in response to emergency situations;
- coordinate team meetings as necessary to assist protected people;
- meaningfully participate in all discussions, whether in person or remote, about protected peoples' wellbeing.
